Girvo intends to host a small "Redesign Atomic" competition which everyone else here knows about =P

Nice assumption, I tend to flick in and out of the forums, hence the not knowing from the collective rectum.

i guess perhaps the biggest thing that shows up here, is that i'm primarily used to working on much smaller sites than one like this. it also shows my lack of education and experience, especially as a lot of the things mentioned have come about as a result of form over function... in reality, i've come up with a design concept that was pleasing to my eye, but in practice not altogether suitable for the intended content.
i'll also cheerfully admit that i really struggled with the advertising placement- partly, i think, because i've used an extremely effective ad-blocker for years when browsing (hence i almost never see most of it), but mostly the bad placement comes about because of my obsession with having everything 'tidied away'.

back to the drawing board. ha! *rubs hands together*

Well, it's all good. I didn't know half this crap until I learned it from someone who knows through experience. And hell it was a eye opening experience, I just wish I could get the staff I require to make good on the other end of things.

The good thing is that as long as you stick to legit websites you don't tend to come across many popups. Occasionally you'll get one of those blasted flash overlays (and the worst one yet, flash vid) but most ads tend to be fairly good compared to how they were previously. Banner Blindness is the new enemy. And it's a pain in the ass.

If you want to learn more about usability, check out Jakob Nielsen's work, he has a usability checklist you can run over that does include advertising.

http://www.useit.com/

In terms of advertising and SEO it's massive, that's why you have people with careers in google search optimisation (not that secure really...) but here's a couple of things I have learned.

1) Box adverts (300x250) tend to be preferred by advertisers, especially since they can carry full video easily without obscuring anything else.
2) the classic Full Banner (468x60) can easily be ignored, putting important features nearby can be a way of making sure people don't completely dismiss it.
3) Not all advertising models work for all people.
4) Here's a good page for checking advert sizes: http://www.iab.net/Ad_Unit (check out the 300x100, it's perfect for a large sidebar full of featured links!)

Hell, possibly merging the sponsored links into 120x60 means you could slip in a couple beside the large banner, it may contribute to blindness tho...

Hell, perhaps going for a tabular design may be a good idea, having tabs for home, magazine, forums, machine etc, and then getting rid of the sidebar to some extent. The solution they currently have is neat and works, but is another solution neater?

Sorry, Rambling...

[No Heroes] is the artistic antithesis of that sinking world; a thorn in the side of their beast. It's for those who move mountains one day at a time. It's for those who truly understand sacrifice. In our world of enemies, we will walk alone...

awesome - there is some very cool stuff on that useit.com site.

the ads are all a direct lift from at0mic and, with the exception of the sponsored links, are all in roughly the same place as the original. part of the idea being kicked around in Girvo's original thread about all this, was that our mock-ups had to retain all the same ads and content as the original page.

as a matter of interest, too, the menu design i used in my mock-up was essentially the same layout as the at0mic homepage was a month ago - i merely 'tweaked' the look of it and animated the open/shut action. i know there are better ways of building a navigation system for this site (particularly with all the double-ups), but in all fairness to Evil Adimin, at0mic has grown like topsy over the years and this rate hasn't allowed for regular foundation upward rebuilds to cope.

so... you wanna join in when Girvo gets all the final details nailed down, Sonictail? the more of us involved the better it'll be.
i was going to say we could do with some fresh meat in here - but you've been around longer than i have :o)

Get the books, they're a good read, if a little dry. Your local library may be able to get them for you.

*scratches head awkwardly* eh heh heh ... yeah... As I said, I come in and out of the community.

Anyways, I like the idea of the design competition, but i'm unsure if I should compete purely due to the time required. I found the original thread (and one particular menu design I really like!) and it's a great Idea and I would love to be a part of it. But I would just design the page to look very much like another site I run, probably.

Eh, we'll see. I don't mind putting a hand in with error checking and trying to fix CSS files etc and weighing in my two cents.

But from what I have seen so far, there's several good ideas across several designs.

Think he does.
I'm guessing it's just a background image to some text which you've hidden.

yup. it's a standard .gif that i made ages ago and simply re-colour it to suit each site i put it on (it links back to my own web design site, on the off-chance someone is actually interested in who did it). in this particular instance: http://www.thexman.net.nz/atomic/background/site-design.gif
