this is all Girvo's fault :o)

he suggested a 'redesign at0mic', which i thought would be a bit of a hoot. however, it seems everyone but me has a life, so i thought i'd throw my effort to the wolves for now: http://www.thexman.net.nz/atomic/

i shall now go to bed and await the lawsuit from haymarket tomorrow...

Ahh very nice, some changes I think that would improve it though is not seperate the banner from the top bar and the rest of the body, and maybe try a different font on the "current issue" and "latest" text etc.. But good job

yeah, i dunno why that's happening, linke - it doesn't make sense... it does actually validate as xhtml 1.1 when it's put in directly, but as soon as you try accessing it from where it's hosted on my site, it spits. this happened to me once before, too, and yet when the job was transferred to the client's site, unchanged, it worked. go figure...
it'll be something i'm doing wrong in my ignorance, for sure :o|

that "current issue", etc, font didn't work out as clean as i'd hoped, either. it's JS_Eurostile, the closest match the the official at0mic font, but it doesn't seem to resize down cleanly from anything other than massive.

Fat_Bodybuilder, do you mean width?

Nice work as usual :)

I think the diagonal background may be a little overused in some parts. And yeah, I think overall a fixed width design would not work for Atomic (mainly the forums), but it does work for the home page. And I also agree with F117_Nighthawk regarding the headers, even reducing the amount of space between each section would look better IMO.

Hrm,

I'll admit, i'm impressed, I love the glassy look. It's a very flash looking design. But I doubt you're posting this to just have your ego stroked so i'll continue on with some critique.

1) Haymarket ribbon, it's colored and formatted that way due to the brand, don't play with branding. Restore the gray and the length
2) Page Width: I like thinner pages as much as you, but this doesn't work on larger monitors. Atomic 2.6 has a liquid layout, if you really want some sides, make it 90-95% but no less.
3) Negative Space: Why is there so damn much at the top? And what's with the HR, sure it breaks things up, but it's a bit needless.
4) Placing the user controls right above the banner helps kill banner blindness, nice one! I'm not completely sold that it's the best place for the controls tho.
5) Prominence: Sure, the site is here to sell the magazine as that makes money. But should the news be shunted off to the side. That missing space on the sides could help equal things up. However the guys would need to really rethink what information is displayed on the front page and where. At the moment there's just TOO much information meaning that nothing has prominence.
6) Hiding things on the side: BAAAD IDEA! Search always should go up in the top right, people look for it there, so why not place the tool there. Would the sponsored links be happy that they're always hidden away under a clickable button?
7) Reviews, Games, Features: the size of the div means that these three div's at the bottom go straight to hell. I probably would put this into a larger column and list them all by date posted, then have a cookie and a small dropdown so people can see just reviews, games or opnions, or all three. But a max of ten items.

What you did there is great, but there's a fundamental problem with the design in that ALL the information is still in there. I'm no stranger to working on this kind of project and for atomic to move forward they need to figure out how to cut some of the fat. Print out both your website design and atomic's front page on some paper and attack em with a marker, figure out what should be cut, what should be more prominent. Tackle the problem from a editor's perspective. Dave has said quite clearly that the site needs to help more with the financial side of things, it needs to work for atomic and help to generate money to be more self sufficient. This requires editorial mandate on content (which from the looks of things he's looking at).

What you did here is good GTAV6, but can you take it to the next level?

Yes.
I assumed from your post you had no idea what all of this was about but thought someone else might point it out.

Girvo intends to host a small "Redesign Atomic" competition which everyone else here knows about =P

Can I suggest you add something that makes it obvious that this is just a mockup, and not the real site. Maybe a javascript popup when the page is opened?

Looks hot though ;)

i can :o)
what you see there is the the product of laziness... (ie; it's much easier to design a fixed width layout than a fluid one)

however, cheers Sonictail - those are a heap of very good points for me to digest, there. that goes for the comments from the rest of you guys, too.

i guess perhaps the biggest thing that shows up here, is that i'm primarily used to working on much smaller sites than one like this. it also shows my lack of education and experience, especially as a lot of the things mentioned have come about as a result of form over function... in reality, i've come up with a design concept that was pleasing to my eye, but in practice not altogether suitable for the intended content.
i'll also cheerfully admit that i really struggled with the advertising placement- partly, i think, because i've used an extremely effective ad-blocker for years when browsing (hence i almost never see most of it), but mostly the bad placement comes about because of my obsession with having everything 'tidied away'.

back to the drawing board. ha! *rubs hands together*

edit- not a silly idea, either, johnsee. i've now tweaked it along those lines.

What I meant was like, Atomic 2.6 takes up 100% of my browser, whereas Atomic 2.7 there looks like it has a set px for the width, so there is a lot of plank space on both sides of the monitor.

I fucken suck at webby stuff but that's just my personal preference.

Other than that I reckon it looks shit hot.

nah, that's cool, Fat_Bodybuilder, that's what i thought you were getting at. yes, it's a fixed width and on a widescreen, it could look a little lost, i guess :o)
