anytime i enter component mode w f8, i cant get it to shade the wireframe. ive pressed 4 and 5 and all that. it makes it really hard to make heads or tales of the object. also, just normally selecting an item makes it go half transparent, so even if it is shaded, i still see the whole wireframe. aaanndd if i create a shape, it wont automatically appear at the origin. thats not really a problem, but it might provide a clue to the other problems? anyway, thanks a lot for any help

Why are you using F8 to go into component mode?

Which components are trying to deal with?

What happens when you right click the object and go into vertex mode instead? That's actually component mode as well, but a more specific instruction.

As for new objects in the middle of the grid, there's a setting for that somewhere. Can't remember where.

If you still get no joy in component mode, go into the attributes for the object and then into the 'Mesh Component Display' tab. Play around with the backface culling settings.

If that fixes it, then there's probably some shitty global settings somewhere that are applying unwanted attributes to new objects.

When it doubt, do a 'restore to defaults' if you can't be bothered looking around through the prefs. It's a huge UI and undoing something that might have been set by another person can be a lenghty process.

hey dude, i appreciate the help. i found how to create stuff on the origin using that setting. i also found that mesh component display thing and as best as i could get, i turned the backface culling to 'hard', and that kinda helped, but its still pretty transparent. i also reset the defaults and nothing changed. as far as the f8 thing goes, i might have the terminology wrong, im just following this dvd tutorial and im trying to play w the hulls and stuff. thats when its unshaded altogether. any other wisdom?

Ok so just to clarify:

You're unable to see solid shading in the viewport on a selected object?

If that's the case, and you've reset all settings, I'd be a bit wary of the install itself and maybe some actual bugs in the viewport.

You're not using an ATI gaming video card by any chance are you?

Also be aware that when viewing an object in hulls mode, you should be able to see through it all over the place. I've personally never used that component mode at any point in the 5 or so years I've been using Maya.

What do you see when you go into vertex mode or faces mode?

Does it still look all messed up when you grab a face and extrude it for example?

One other thing - when you say "thats when its unshaded altogether", I'm not sure if you're just talking about display modes (4, 5, 6, etc), but all objects in Maya are shaded by default with a mid-grey lambert, so they should all look solid and the same in shaded view, not semi-transparent.

You really shouldn't have to go into backface culling settings just to keep them hidden on a selected object. Something is very wrong by the sounds of it.

Are you on a shared computer in a lab or something? It's also possible that some one has gone in and edited the core application MEL that builds the UI and handles default object properties, which would be a really shitty thing to do. I think that's really unlikely but failing any other explanation, it is actually possible.

edit: another quick thought...this could a bit obvious and silly, but go into hypershade (window > rendering > hypershade) and go into the default lambert attributes. Just check it doesn't have transparency - in case that's what's messing with your shaded visuals.

i dont think ive got an ATI card, but i am on an acer laptop and it had some problems rendering w a Poser program. that might be it? ive posted a similar thread here http://area.autodesk.com/index.php/forums/viewthread/12774/
and ive got some pictures up. maybe that can help clear up what im talking about since i dont know all the lingo and stuff yet and i cant really communicate like is probly necessary.
if it helps, in Poser, i need to be in SreeD instead of the standard OpenGL. whatever that means

Odd, usually its a simple setting through your panels display thats the cause. Wish i could help more. Unfortunatley this will be the beginning of many problems in Maya. One site i highly recommend for finding answers to problems is www.cgsociety.org

That's your problem: Acer.

well it sounds like its your hardware although maya dosnt need a lot to play with (used to run it on a gforce 2 with no probs)
laptop graphics cards have at best lackluster drivers for them you may want to see you can update your graphics drivers for your laptop.
