How do i actually add a texture to the contruction plane :P

No one?

All i wanna do i make a refence image to model something. Isnt that the contruction plane? or am i way off. I got 10 weeks to learn this shit and im hopeless.

Sorry I meant to reply here before but I forgot about it.

Which part of the steps are you stuck on?

Here's one way:

Make a new nurbs Cube. A nurbs cube, being all nurbsy and stupid, is actually just 6 disconnected squares. Delete the 3 planes of the cube that are nearest to the camera as you look at it from a perspective angle.

You want to have the rear, bottom, and left side faces remaining. If you have no top-view reference image, then delete the bottom face as well.

On your back/rear face, you now want to map the front-view reference image, and as you model you'll be working in front of it with the reference behind. Right click on the back plane, and go "Assign new material" from the menu, choosing lambert from the extended submenu.

Once you're in the lambert attributes (name it so you can find it again), click the mapping button beside colour (little checkered box), and then choose file.

Use the folder icon beside the image name field to find your front-view reference image, and then click the right-facing arrow up the top beside the field that says "file1".

You should be back in the lambert attributes now, with the colour channel mapped to an input. Set the ambient value to full and you're set.

Repeat process for side-view, top-view, etc.

If you accidentally drop out of the lambert/shader attributes window, you can back in by right-clicking the object and going to edit, or you can open the hypershade window and double click your shader (window > rendering > hypershade).

Last thing worth doing is to create a reference layer. In channel view, click the new layer icon (looks like a plane with a little sun above it), name it ("_ref" or whatever), then add the reference planes to it by selecting them in the viewport, and then right-clicking on the layer for the add options.

You can then set the layer to reference to prevent you from constantly selecting the reference planes by accident. Look for the R setting in the layers box.

See how you go and let me know if you need more clarification.

Where are you learning Maya?

This is the kind of thing they can show you in 5 seconds in class, as opposed to spending half an hour screwing around with it as you find your own way around. Maybe you can kick their arses to give some better demos? :)

I had an awesome Maya teacher back in the day and the difference it makes is huge.

Im learning Maya a QANTM, im doing animation there. Maya is going to be my life from now on lol. Ill give it a shot and see how it works!
