Great job man. Great idea behind the whole thing. About shaders though, try it out with black diffuse, black specular(that's right, ZERO) and the mirror/reflection colour orange. Assuming reflection is set to full, that should be right(I think) for copper look.

Gotta get into soft shadows and blurred reflections man. What are you using for the renderer?

Have a bit of fun with some mental ray tutorials and watch it come alive.

yeah that is using mental ray.... haven't got into much of the advanced lighting effects. I will have to have a scout around for some more tuts.... I have been concentrating on some zbrush stuff lately so have neglected max, and my 2 year student licence runs out this week I think :(

Try looking into Final Gathering (in Maya the default final gathering settings already look great a lot of the time), look at light properties in Max like shadow radius (?)

I don't know any max so I can't really help too much, but in Maya there's a few easy settings you apply to the lights, then a few bits and pieces to set in the render settings, and it's a world of difference.

just go into max's adv lighting section and turn it on.

the default settings look good. tweak photons and stuff to reduce render times or increase quality.

for better effects use a skylight. tweak the intensity to how you like it. perhaps use a couple of direct spotlights, one from the back generally (med intensity,no shadows) and one from the front left or right (not too intense and your choice if you put shadows on)

that would be my ideas. play around anyway.

Just a skylight and two spots I think one with shadows

try doing some renders with just the skylight and see what kind of shadow you get. if you have turned on adv lighting it should make the shadows soft (fade instead of being straight sharp edges) see how that goes and tell me what you think.

(also fellow atomicans if im wrong please correct me, but i think he will get a much better effect doing it like this.)

The ideal shadowing situation is to have them sharp near the object and blurrier as it gets further away.

In Maya you set the light radius and then the ray count (used for blurring accuracy/grain).

Anything like that in Max?

OK here is the render with just skylight, some parts look nicer just looks flater I think

yeah true. but notice how the shadows work better? you get the blurring (soft shadows)

you will need to add more lighting into the scene but yeah.
do you see what im getting at? it just looks more realistic now.
