Hi all,
I just got a 500g external hdd for backing up, but I have no idea what software to use.

I want something that'll just backup any changes or new files..it's far too hard to do manually.

I'd like it to be free or cheap

Any help appreciated!

Note that that program has 1 maximum 1GB limit.

Using a synchronizer like Allwaysync is another option.

I installed it but when I try to start it up I get "unable to start application"...and I need more than 1 gig at a time (50g music and 100g pics)

I'll try that sync program and see how that goes..

What about Microsoft's SyncToy? I am not recommending it as I haven't really used it; I'm just interested to see what people think of it.

EDIT: I also am after something to backup my stuff while being able to use the stuff I am backing up without fully restoring it.

SyncToy is really for keeping data synced without hassles, it's not a backup program as such.

MS Backup? Can't that backup to external drives. Otherwise you could just copy it all over.

Actually MS Backup is just a hobbled version of Symantec Backup Exec. It's not too bad actually.

Wow, not one of the above posts is giving a simple free or easy solution.

Just use something like tar or winrar, have it all in one archive, and use the feature to only add new files, or update the archive when you need to do so. This could also be scheduled to run automatically, say every week or so as long as your hard drive would be plugged in.

I think SyncToy 2.0 is out of beta ( http://tinyurl.com/2jx4sk ). I think I'll give it a try.

I'm using SyncToy 1.4. Does the job quite nicely with Echo settings.

Thanks for the helps!

Data syncing and data backup may seem the same but as a professional IT person, I know the difference. Data syncing is a form of backup but real data back up is more. Yes, you can use SyncToy but it's not a professional solution as such.

I use Norton backup 14, at home and at work, the initial backup takes a while but from them on it only takes a few min's as it only redoes what has changed since the last backup.

So, what more is "real data back up"?
