Finder woes

Ok, I have a couple of gripes with Finder.app, and I'm sure I'm only scratching the tip of the iceberg.

1) Video's are not thumbnailed appropriately. How come every other file manager can get this right? The Linux ones that I've used generate a thumbnail a minute or so in. That way, you don't just get stupid title or disclaimers. Argh!

2) Can't change "open with" preferences globally. I seriously hope I'm just doing something wrong here, but I can't seem to change ALL files EVERYWHERE to open with one app on my computer, let alone via network shares. Whoever came up with .DS_STORE needs to get a job at Microsoft, because that's the level of design you'd expect on a Windows machine, not on a Macintosh. Grr!

3) Spatial file management. Can't do much about this one.

And the biggest one!!
4) How oh how can I put shares in the side bar? I have a home fileserver, and I want to put my shared pics / music on the sidebar. I am aware I could mount them at ~/Pictures and ~/Music, but I just want them in the sidebar. I can't seem to drag their icons anywhere! These are automounted as startup items for my user, because occasionally other people use my MacBook, so I don't want to mount them in /etc/fstab.

I've had a look at these 'finder' replacements like Forklift and friends, but I don't want to pay $50USD to make these things go away, as well as the fact that they are too heavy. Plus they don't even do thumbnails properly!!!
Are there any decent replacements in MacPorts or Fink? I quite like Thunar, but at this point in time, I'll settle for anything!

*Edit* At the moment I've been reduced to using Bridge CS3. Help me!

I hear that

I've been working on packages for the iPhone which use the debian package management system, I keep having to remove the .DS_Store files to prevent them from being included in the packages. it's shitting me!

Well, I installed Nautilus and Thunar from MacPorts, but neither seem to do video thumbnailing under Mac. So it looks like I'm stuck with Finder. Argh!

Not the shares as such but folders under the shares go up beside the view modes or the cog thingy. Just hover it there for about a second and let go.
