MBP keyboard/ mouse issues

Since Friday night I've been having some problems with the keyboard and mouse on my MBP, they stop working. Trackpad doesn't work, keyboard doesn't work but the computer isn't froze, time will tick over and when on battery it'll eventually hybernate itself from lack of inactivity.

Rebooting doesn't seem to help, all that works is waiting and eventually they start working again.

I haven't done anything new in the last few days. No new software, no new hardware, nothing.

I've poked around in my system.log file and came across this:
Aug 17 18:14:04: --- last message repeated 1 time ---
Aug 17 18:14:17 macbox kernel[0]: Apple Internal Keyboard / Trackpad: family specific matching fails
Aug 17 18:14:17: --- last message repeated 14 times ---
Aug 17 18:14:17 macbox kernel[0]: Apple Internal Keyboard: family specific matching fails
Aug 17 18:14:18 macbox kernel[0]: Apple Internal Keyboard: match category IODefaultMatchCategory exists
Aug 17 18:14:18 macbox kernel[0]: Touchpad: family specific matching fails

Aug 17 18:14:19 macbox kernel[0]: Apple Internal Keyboard: family specific matching fails

I have a feeling that that isn't good, but I can't really seem to find much info on that error message.

Also, occationally I'll be just surfing the web or typing away and my dvd drive will eject itself, no pressing of the eject key, nor do I actually have something in the drive to eject.

Anyone got any ideas other than a ghost in the machine?

* Edit - sorry should have included, this is a 12 month old MBP (but with the logic board replaced about 1 month ago) and I'm using the latest version of Leopard.

Mmmmmm shit.

1. Tried using an external kbd (alu silver flat)

2. Kbd firmware update?

3. SMBUS/EFI update?

4. Tried to do a target-drive installation to an external USB/Firewire drive and checking if it does it on a "clean" OS?

I didn't have a spare kb/ mouse handy at the time, I use one all day every day at work though, so I wouldn't notice the internal one being dodgy I guess...

I've got all the latest updates for the keyboard firmware and EFI/ etc.

I recently did a reinstall (2 weeks ago?) as I bought a new hard drive (there's a thread in here about the problems I had restoring from Time Machine). I ended up just doing a local install.
Maybe I should set up an install on an external hdd though.

Or maybe I didn't put the kb/ mouse ribon on well enough when I put it back together after the hdd replacement :P

That's possible, but the keyboard/trackpad is just a USB Device, when you unplug it - it doesn't list under input devices in system profiler for instance.

Family specific matching fails tells me there's something wrong with the .kext or more likely the keyboard/trackpad hardware itself given the weird eject thing you've been having.

Have you got an ubuntu live cd you can try?

Those guys have had the logic board and topcase replaced to resolve theirs :/

Wanna buy my 15" Macbook pro? :P

I'll download an ubuntu disk today to have a crack.

And no, I don't want to buy your MBP, mines still under Apple Care, and since it happened since my LAST logic board replacement I'm really pissed.

Gonna have to wait till Tin gets back I think :(

I'm going to take it back to Apple tomorrow and get them to fix it (since it stopped working after they replaced my logic board!).

Luckily one of my bosses is on holidays for the next month and left his 17" MBP at work which I'll borrow while mines in the shop :D

Woot, got it back! They told me 10 days for the turnaround I explained what was wrong and they were like "oh, yeah seen that one before, we'll order the top case in the next batch". Took 3 working days in the end :P

did the DVD eject issue come good.

My MBP has been waking up at night and ejecting a phantom disk lately...
I have to shut it down or it just keeps doing it.

Yeah I haven't had it happen at all since I got it back. Looking like it's all fixed :)

good news... for you.
I'm about to leave the country and can't have my machine to die mid trip... maybe I should sell it before sept ten and get the new one.
