Hey, my used Powerbook G4 1.67GHZ PowerPC 1.5GB RAM 1440x900 the backlight of the screen has ceased working.

I can still see the monitor but is very dark like someone turned out the lights on it. Outputs to other monitor ok.

What are my options?

It's either the inverter or the LCD. If it's the inverter, it's a cheap fix. If it's the LCD it's going to be $1000 plus.

Take it into a service centre and make them diagnose it :)

Inverter has gone. However since it the LCD is sealed permantely i'd be up for $1185 which is not feasible.

... Really?

If you trust me not to.. I don't know, do something bad (can't think of anything off the top of my head) PM me your serial number, and I'll confirm that, and find out how likely it is that the inverter can be swapped out without replacing the screen.

GENERALLY, the inverter is seperate from the LCD. Not always.

Well Next Byte Service Centre in Clarence Street Sydney quoted me $1185.

I was prepared to pay $100 - $200 for repair time.

And check your pm :)

Unfortunately that unit is VERY hard to source inverters for. Plus, MOST likely it was the backlight, and they have no idea how to check one vs the other. I somehow doubt they would have been brave enough to pop the display bezel and have a peek :P

Would be worth changing the whole screen? I'm in two places as to what i should do.

What would i get for it as it is? Broken Screen and all

Not a huge amount. But you could use it as a perfectly fine computer with an external monitor. Obviously not great as a laptop :P

Really, $1200 is getting up to the price of a macbook.

Yah TinBane is right ... It sounds like save a bit more and buy a new one is better than throwing epic amounts of money at the old one. {:)
