G5 iMAC 20"

You won't run yellow dog linux, but you'll run every other non PPC version of Linux there is and I'd be guessing you could pick up a Mac Mini plus screen for not much more then $800, and that it'd be faster for all intents and purposes.

Like I said if you just want something interesting to run Linux on then get it, but i'd rather buy a sparc or something else interesting if I was geeking out personally. If you want to buy a Mac for a computer that's going to support OS X then an iMac G5 might be fine for the next year or 2, but when developers start dropping PPC code then you're not going to have much fun.

It's all back to the days when Apple dropped 68k support, apps might work on older OS's for a while yet, but eventually you're going to be left with a computer that can't run its own native OS

Well. I have a 1.6GHz 17" G5 iMac, and I have nothing but good to report. And it is the older model, before the Ambient Light Sensor model. It is mostly used for internet/office/email now, but I was using it for video encoding before I built a Windows machine for games, and while it isn't necessarily the quickest machine, it is still quite solid.

I've been intending to check Linux out on a PPC machine, but have never gotten around to it. Let us know how you get on with it.

Just buy a second hand 20". I'm sure you can get them for just a couple of hundred more, and it's muuuuch more future proof.

+1. I have had a first gen G5 IMac for over three years and it has been fab. The only problem was a dud DVD drive a month before Applecare ran out. Replaced under warranty.

Does everything I need, burns DVD's etc.

Does not run Windows but what the heck !!!

Hey Waltish. I was just checking eBay for you (as a guide). Intel iMacs really are a couple of hundred more. They go for around $1000, and g5's are about 800-850. I don't know why you want to run YDL so much. Other than Yaboot or whatever they're using these days, and that many more packages won't work, it's exactly the same.

I hope you don't like youtube, because that site _will not load_ under YDL. And once you start using OSX you'll like it more than anything, so it would be a shame to not be able to run Snow Leopard.

We just don't want to see you drop nearly a grand on a machine that works well for a month, and then you wish you had have bought something a bit more future proof :(

Because I have YDL on the PS3 and I am Interested in learning more about stuff related to PPC and in the future PPC/Cell.

Power based processors punch well above their clock speed , on a personal and philosophical level I don't want to use Intel or Microsoft stuff and am making my way to a computing environment that doesnt include them.

If and when the latest Macs Run on AMD CPUs I will look at them, but for now its Power PC I am interested in.

And yah for sure I will be having a good look at OSX but to tell the truth I am not a fan of Apples closed nature either.

Second hand MAC hardware doesn't fund the black wiggles empire, The computing/IT landscape of the future will be just as closed and imprisoned with Jobs as Emperor of Information as it would with Ballmer in the role of Fuhrer.

YDL is still in development and the Flash/YTube thing is being sorted as are other issues, but folks have got it working in YDL and on the PS3 too.

I am not alone in my interest in YDL there is growing interest and support for this PPC distro.

And on MACs running it.

Each to their own , I have my reasons for taking this direction.
But money and lack of skill is making it a slow transition, so I will muddle on, I am in no hurry. {:)

Never said it was a new distro but it is still in active development, YDL 6.0 came out this year, just a couple of months ago in fact.

But yah it supports a lot of Mac systems,
http://www.terrasoftsolutions.com/support/hardware/
though according to them not G3 on 6.0, but it seems with YDL 1x it can be done.

I don't know what CPU was in the G3.

And YDL 6.0 also supports some IBM stuff and a few other bits of kit {:)
