Apparently if you have a dedicated video card in your Mac, Disco generates a cloud of smoke as it burns and your mouse can waft through it...bit of a wank, but still cool I guess...

Quote by zebra
Smoke now works on the MacBook Intel integrated graphics cards also - not just the higher end MacBookPro/Mac Pro/iMac style boxen.

quote by plebsmacker

Even though it's only candy you can change the smoke to be either

Smoke, Fire, Goo, Icy Mist, Purple Haze, Red Sea or Stream as well as custom setups

Nice, very nice, now if only my burner worked (its doing that thing where it says it can't burn before it even tries, arrrggg!).

/me awaits zeb to explain to cg776 just how shit the drives are in the macs :P~

Hey zeb , are there any pioneer drives suitable to replace the matshit a drives yet? apple claimed the others were too big to fit but i've found that the MacbookPro has plenty of room - well it would if the bottom of the top case didn't have a support coming out of it to fill the gap between the topcase and the ODD

The new MBPs have LG drives :) I forget the model unfortunately, zeb may remember. Nice to see they are finally getting rid of the useless "super" drives.

I highly recommend Parallels Desktop - http://www.parallels.com/en/products/desktop/

Uses the hardware virtualisation capabilities of the intel macs, can run Windows, Linux, whatever, quite fast.

VMWare Fusion is probably also worth looking at, but I haven't tried it.

It's running with a smile...it's better than the last time that I tried...

Ah, I was wondering about that with parallels.

Can VMWare boot a parallels image?

Yojimbo - US$39

From Wikipedia:
Yojimbo is a shareware personal information manager for Mac OS X by Bare Bones Software. It can store notes, images/media, URLs, web pages. Yojimbo can also encrypt any of its contents and store the password in the Keychain.

I personally use it to keep track of all my website accounts and online receipts (you can print anything as a PDF to Yojimbo directly).

http://www.barebones.com/products/yojimbo/

Delicious Library - US$40

From Wikipedia:
Delicious Library is a media cataloguing application for Mac OS X, developed by Delicious Monster. The software allows users to manage their collections of books, movies, CDs and video games by either entering them manually or by using a Bluetooth scanner, an iSight camera, or a USB-keyboard-type barcode scanner (such as a modified CueCat). In its first month Delicious Library generated $250,000 worth of sales.

Fantastic app, I have all my DVD, games and books loaded on, and I can keep track of loans (it integrates reminders into iCal). No other cataloging program comes even close.

Chicken of the VNC - Free
From Wikipedia:
Chicken of the VNC is a Virtual Network Computing client for Mac OS X licensed under the GNU General Public License. The current version is 2.0b4. Development has been stalled since 2005. The name is a play on words referencing the Chicken of the Sea Tuna brand.

Simple VNC client, have used it for a while with no probs. It does the job, and it's free!

Coconut Battery - Free

From the website:
coconutBattery isn't just a tool which shows you only the current charge of your battery - it also shows you the current maximum capacity of it in relation to the original capacity your battery had as it left the factory.

You also get information about the battery-loadcycles (how often did you fully load your battery), the current charger (coconutBattery even warns you if you plugged in a wrong charger for your Notebook) and last but not least information about the age of your Mac.

Simple, works well and comes in handy for monitoring and logging your battery cycles.

Coconut WiFi - Free

From the website:
coconutWiFi displays you a small aqua-bubble at the top of your screen which indicates whether you're in range of a wireless network or not.

The app also tells you if the wireless networks in your range are encrypted or open, so you won't miss the next open wireless network any more.

Handy app when you're on the run.

FFView - Free

From the site:
FFView is a fast OpenGL-powered picture viewer a la ACDsee (2.x). It is aimed at letting you read manga or other comics onscreen (windowed & fullscreen mode). Features include fast prefetching, smooth panning, voice commands, 2-page mode, a magnifying lens, the ability to browse pictures inside archives (.rar/.cbr, .zip/.cbz/, .pdf) and sticky per-picture options. It reads EXIF tags and is scriptable.

Read comics on your Macbook, and turn the pages with voice commands, great for late night reading!

Handbrake - Free

From the site:
HandBrake is an open-source, GPL-licensed, multiplatform, multithreaded DVD to MPEG-4 converter, available for MacOS X, Linux and Windows.

Great, simple and easy encoder, plus it's free.

I'll update it at work, it should be up to date up to you post though.

I decided to move it to my site to make it easier to update, and easier to browse though as the list was starting to get too long.

Though if people want a re-formatted list on here, let me know and I'll do it. If you want a sticky, RTM the post and ask the mods. If they get enough requests I'd say they will sticky it. Until there are more threads in this section its not all that important.

Edit: Updated.

I have a freeware list here: http://mac.sneddo.net/?freeware

I may add a widget filter too, if we get a few more.

If you like your RSS feeds in a stand alone feed reader, Vienna is an excellent free reader.

http://www.opencommunity.co.uk/vienna2.php

I also recommend Growl and its various plugins - you usually get this with Adium iirc, but it has some nice extras that you can customise.

+1 for cyberduck. You should mention that it displays all the available connections to other macs (FTP, sFTP etc) on the local network.

I think VMWare Fusion needs to be added to the list.

VMWare Fusion
VMWare's entrance in the side-by-side OS market. Version 1 has just been released and supports VMWare images from VMWare player and VMWare workstation.

One plus over Parallels is that it supports multiple cores.

I'm finding the "Unity" mode of it a bit flaky. It'll work some times others the VM just dies and has to be rebooted.

Bring on v2 :P

No stress about WMV as you can get them from MS for free anyway :)
