Cheap laptops around $700

My young lady is looking for a cheap laptop. It doesn't need to be anything fancy; all she's going to use it for are word processing, surfing the net, and a bit of light Photoshop work.

She's looking at the Toshiba A200/M00:

It seems like a pretty decent deal. Is there anything to watch out for, or are there any good alternatives?

As long as you can support her for any tech issues, go for it.

IMHO Toshiba make great notebooks, but their support is a little lacking.

If it weren't for her need for shooping whoops, I would have recommended an EEEPC.

Oh, I can sort out what Amby can't, for sure.

I suggested the EEEPC, but she wants something a bit more fully featured and with a larger screen.

Yea, fair call.

Go the toshi or a low end Dell, but I have a toshiba satellite Pro P100, a Dell XPSM1730 and the EEE in my sig, I love them all, and the toshiba is my oldest, but still runs great.

Goodo. As long as it's not a lemon, I think she'll be happy.

Man I hate Toshibas.

I'd rather the Compaq.

Ewwww, Compaq? those aesthetically unpleasing beasts that seem to have nothing oin the way of style and thus make you feel like everything you do is work.

Seriously, Toshibas are fantastic, I am selling mine, but only because 3 laptops is a bit much for me.

Honestly? Whatever presents the best specs for cheap. A low end Dell Inspiron would probably suit you just fine, plus if your ladytype is aesthetically minded you get that choice of colours thing going on:
http://www1.ap.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/inspnnb_1525?c=au&cs=audhs1& $700, only 1GB ram though. Faster CPU.

The last Toshiba I owned wasn't exactly a wonder in terms of reliability - three motherboards, two optical drives, 3 screens, new keyboard and a new upper case. To be fair though I was in high school and dragging it with me everywhere on the bike so it wasn't exactly given the most tlc. Plus the only money I ever forked out for repairs was a $100 excess.

More recently though I found a low end Compaq for my mother. It's been reliable but then again it hardly moves from it's docking station and it came with so much pre installed bloat I had to spend 3 hours getting rid of the stuff it didn't need. After that though it ran fine, the lappy has a good solid feel to it and the keyboard is pretty nice.

I would have to echo -80 sentiments to some degree about the low end Toshibas.

I know that a few years ago the low end stuff was being made with the same parts and the BenQ notebooks (although I have nfi what the deal is these days).

My advice would be to look at EOL business grade models from sites such as catch of the day. Sure they may not be the top of the line but for the price you want to pay they would probably offer some better quality.

Again, not the most pleasing in terms of looks (although I love the look myself) but I know they were selling IBM R61s for about that price a while ago.
