Why did he (and, presumably, you) not have backups of everything anyway? Doesn't matter if the thing's going to get serviced or not. The cost of storage is so low these days - if it's important, BACK IT UP!

Stupidity reigns supreme. Time for your friend to not be your friend anymore. I don't ever give out bad IT advice and if I'm not sure then I don't get involved.

well, whatever. water off a duck's back. glad to have brightened up your collective days. although i must say i'm surprised at the unanimous "stupid" vote. what is this, the WoW forums?
it's not like they explicitly stated they are going to wipe the drive to restore it back to it's four-and-a-half-minute-boot-time chuggy vista default.

thanks jeruselem, i will keep this in mind for the future.

They didn't directly tell you they were going to, but they told you to backup the data.

This sort of makes the implication that your data might get lost while they have it.

Look at it like this. Someone on the WoW forums threatens to sue, let's say, PayPal. PayPal had told them if they wanted to cancel a transaction for $3K that was from a dodgy ebay deal they had 3 weeks to do so. The person on WoW, threatening to sue Paypal, waited 5 weeks but feels that PayPal is still at fault.

Would you call that smart?

Yeah it's almost standard for a company to recover a machine even if it doesn't need it. Sometimes critical machine components are replaced, to you it may have just been a fan, there could have been other faults causing the fan not to work. I know you may think WTF are they deleting data, you assumed it was just a hardware fault which in turn is not totally outrageous to expect that data won't be lost.

I gather it was your first time dealing with acer just relax these fools on at0mic have all done it so much, they don't remember their first time ;).

Just chill even though they're hostile :P (and why would you delete Vista? I love it :)

They have a standard way of testing the machines.

Just because you write in saying the fan is broken, doesn't mean the fan is broken. Doesn't mean that's where they'll look straight away either.

First step would be getting the machine back to factory, to determine whether it's an issue with hardware or software. They don't know what you've done...

Secondly if they warn you there's a chance it could be wiped, maybe you should backup...

Sheesh.

Yup, they might find a faulty HDD too

Fan controllers can be driven in software these days, screwing around with a custom install can mess things up, not to mention that in some rare cases a complete replacement is required and you won't generally get your data back then either.

AFAIK any manufacturer tells you to back up just in case, usually it's prudent to listen to the person on the phone - there's a reason they are working where they are and you're calling them and not the opposite.

I know I'm repeating what many of you have already said, but it is standard practice to put a notebook HDD back to "factory" state when it goes in for repair. It's to make sure none of your software is causing the issue.

Having said that, I just got my Asus back from the Melbourne service center and was AMAZED that they DIDN'T wipe my drive. Then again I had already been dealing with Taiwan so all the locals had to do was replace the mainboard (it was a known fault with certain units).

Of course, they DID lose my 256Mb MMC card, but that's a whole other story :)
