omg i want to sue acer

my friend had an acer laptop. he didnt like vista that came with it so i helped him put his copy of xp on his acer laptop.

the rear case fan in the laptop recently failed and i recommended he send it in to get it fixed, as it's still under warranty. my friend said acer had told him to back up his data. i told him that's a standard line and there's no chance of any data loss, they're replacing a 30 cent fan, not doing open heart surgery.

my friend got his laptop back the other day, and they've bloody WIPED THE ENTIRE HARD DRIVE?! they've reinstalled vista, destroying all his data and giving him an OS he's not happy with.

the fan now works.

Ditto to cyber.

You want to sue them because you ignored their advice 'cause you've got no idea what you're talking about.

While I think Acer laptops suck, every laptop manufacturer does the exact thing Acer would do.

Yep, standard practice, all lappy manufacturers will ship it in the state it was when it first left the factory.

It is basically a way of them not being liable if you have pirated material on there, so you can't say it was them if you get caught with it.

if i sent it in without the harddrive in, would they replace the harddrive? the fan doesn't need a harddrive to run.

seriously, it's like sending your car to the mechanic to fix the windscreen wipers, and him taking out your custom seat covers because the car didn't come like that.

Either way, you were still warned that it would happen.

No it's not. It's totally different. The REASON the HDD is wiped is for testing. Acer don't just grab a fan, ram it in and ship the laptop back to you. They get the laptop, they test the laptop to determine any problems which need to be fixed, repair the problems, and then test the laptop again for any problems.

No, they'd probably reject your warranty claim because you're the type of person who removes components randomly.

As mentioned - you were told what would happen. You decided that their protocols were stupid and that they wouldn't do exactly what they said they would because it didn't make sense to you.

That's not only shows that Acer were responsible and organised it shows you were arrogant and ignorant.

grats.

No, it is like Holden getting your new commodore for testing for a warranty claim on the engine, finding that you whacked a POD filter on it and don't have proof that it was done by a mechanic and so they place the standard one on there to make sure that your POD filter didn't fuck the engine.

They were simply removing all software except the originally packaged stuff as to determine that some shitty app you put on there isn't the cause of the problems.

Feel free to take them to court, but the legal fees will be worth more than the laptop or data that was wiped.

That, and you will lose.

EDIT: Spellunk.

That is so funny. I bet your friend will correctly think twice before asking you for computer advice again.

What i don't get is why you'd tell your friend not to back up his data. Fair enough you thought acer wouldn't do anything that would cause data lose, but basic core logic should tell you that if the machine is going out of your sight then anything can happen. The laptop could be dropped in transit, stolen, lost, taken past equipment that could corrupt data. So regardless of what you think acer would do, backing up before shipping a system off for rma is just the plain logical thing to do.

Oh and as much as i love analogies, yours makes no sense. The automotive and it industries have a completely different set of protocols that they work to. Instead of trying to understand one by comparing it to the other, why not just under stand how each works. It will save you loosing data and having to take your seat covers out of your car every time you take it to the mechanic ;)

cheers

Why wouldn't you backup your data, especially when you were warned to do so?

Then again, it's the best laugh I've had all day!

There is a segment here called 'The Woodies', where they discuss home reovation problems......

http://blogs.abc.net.au/nsw/702_weekends/

.....they have section called 'Boofhead of the Week'.

If we had something similar here at Atomic, surely the OP would win it!?
