"3" data deals...

Hey all,

The saga continues. Story so far: Voda basically said "get stuffed", so I went around looking for good data deals. From what I can see 3 has the best deal:

$49 cap with "news" bundle.
Includes Nokia e71 (the phone I wanted initially)

then I add on

$20 / 1GB "X-Series" data pack.
TOTAL - - - $69 cap

$350 of calls, MMS, SMS etc; 1GB data for YouTube, Google, At0mic, Bigger than Cheeses etc; Nokia e71 handset.

Now I know that the limitation with 3 is that you get slammed for data if you're roaming, though call rates are not affected. I'd only use data when I'm away from home - and 99% of that time is in or near the inner northwest Sydney area. Having seen the coverage map, I should be OK.

Have asked friends with 3 about service and coverage, and they range from pretty happy to extremely pleased. Which is good.

SO I just wanted to ask my favourite online community for your thoughts before I get on the phone, cancel out of Voda and jump on the 3 bandwagon.

Thanks!

That's pretty much what I have done, except I got the N95-8gb instead.

Yeah, that's what I have now with Voda (got pwned with data charges). I like the phone, TBH, but on balance I prefer to keep my media, camera and communications to separate devices. It was terribly convenient for taking quick shots on random outings though, so I will miss that function even from the short time that I've had the phone.

Also, it's fantastic having STANDARD plugs for everything: USB, 3.5 mm headphone, standard Nokia charger. e71 will be a step down in that regard also.

BUT e71 has the landscape screen, QWERTY keyboard, monoblock form factor, metal construction and identical OS running it all to look forward to. Oh, and not being charged $2k+ for ~250 MB of data.

That is exactly what i have now (and i'm posting from my e71 now). Great phone and i honestly can't fault 3's service (been with the for 4ish years and currently have 7gb mobile broadband with them as well). Very quick for browsing the internet on this phone (and mobile broadband as well). i say go for it, you won't be sorry ;)

Edit:
Hmm, i have just found a bit of a issue with this phone. It seems that once you put too many songs on the memory card the phone has some problems handeling it. What this means is that when you then go to Tones to change the ring tones it only displays 'Download' and 'Off'. The way to solve this problem (and it took me several hours googling to work out) is to copy the ringtones onto the Phones memory itself. Then remove the memory card (make sure to do so using the Remove memory card option so as not to corrupt it) and then going in and setting the ringtones (all the ringtones will not be listed). Then just put the card back in. You will need to do this whenever you want to change a tone unfortunately. Still, that being the only problem i have with this phone is a good thing. I am loving what this phone can do :D

Kewl. I was not planning to use it for music or video (got my Creative for that) but I didn't know that cards on that phone are not hot-swappable. I was planning just to plug it into the computer and stick ringtone-ised MP3 tracks on phone memory anyway, use the memory card for recordings, pictures etc.

I'm glad to hear good things from another 3 customer. Looks like this weekend Voda's going to lose a customer. Too bad, so sad!

(woo, e71 for meee!)

The memory cards are Hot swapable, however you have to do the remove memory card option (just like Removing devices in Windows) just to make sure the card isn't being used and to avoid possible memory Corruption.

If you aren't going to be putting a huge amount of MP2 files on the card it won't be a problem (it seems the phone gets a little confused when they are a huge amount on there). It is a great phone though, especially with XSeries and internet on the go :D

I'm very much looking forward to it. I've been using a spare 6300 and I really liked the solid candybar feel (after my 6280). Now the N95 8GB has the same not-quite-so-solid slider feel and it'll be good to wrap my mitts around cool metal again.

Yeah, i know what you mean. The 6280 was one of the WORST built phones i have seen in a long time. Before getting my e71 i have been using a Sony ericsson P1, which is a very solid phone. However the E71 feels much more solid than even that. Very nice.

You know, I didn't mind the 6280 that much. Sure it didn't feel like you could stomp on it, but neither did it feel like it could fall to pieces at any second.

If that's one of the worst-built phones of all time, I'm even more enthused about the e71 now! ^_^

Well, my 6280 DID fall apart in my hands. Not to mention the dodgy as software, the having to take the SIM card out and put it back in every time i wanted to send an SMS, and the slide that was soo loose that it wouldn't stay up. It doesn't even COMPARE to the e71. It is one solid, sturdy, heavy feeling phone. It feels SOOOO good ;)

Wow. You got pwned - what a dud phone.

I used mine for the better part of a year as my primary internet connection, it went everywhere with me (including overseas). The MiniSD card cover fell off, and once I dropped it and it flew into about five pieces - one of which was loose when I put it back. And it got dust and grit underneath the screen and in the slide mechanism when I put it back in my pocket after having rolled around in the dirt... BUT it worked fine so meh.

It was working fine with no operational faults. But then it got stolen in when I went to China.

My Mum's 6280 did the same. Fell apart, literally.
