Hi, just wondering if anyone here has used a Nokia N series for GPS through Optus? I'm looking at at N95, but the chick at the store said if you're planning on using the GPS you're better off paying an extra $10 per month for 100 MB of data. If you download the maps from the web to your phone do you still have to pay for data when using it?

The first time you use it, it will ask you to define an access point, if you pick no it won't connect.

The maps are usually pre-loaded on the memory card so you don't realm need to.

If you want voice guidance you have pay a subscription to Nokia and download an upgrade on your PC then copy it to your memory card, it's about 450Mb so you need some spare space.

I just got an N95 ... what use does defining an access point serve? The maps are pre-loaded, and I'm showing satellite signal ... but no indication of my position.

Is it "assisted" GPS ?

Defining an access point means "Do you want it to connect to the Internet" to check for updates etc...

...this incurs a cost for data charges (unless you define a wireless one, say your home network).

It's in the settings so you can enable or disable it.

On the N95 and N82 the data service is used for software updates, A-GPS and (in Nokia Maps v2) satellite imagery.
