e71 - what are my chances of getting one?

hey all,

Having done a bit of research, it seems the Nokia E71 is the phone for me. It's supposed to have been launched already, but I don't know about Australian availability or carrier exclusivity etc. etc.

Also, given the "you just can't get one" status of the E70 (which I would prefer), should I just give up and go for something more available?

Lastly - I know plenty of you know heaps more than me. What I want to do, apart from the regular phone and SMS functions:

- MMS with camera
- e-mail / web browsing <== VERY IMPORTANT
- diary / address book / todo list.

Essentially I want to be able to do my e-mail and forum-surfing on the bus ride home, so that the time in front of my PC is spent finishing games, pwning n00bs and encoding video/audio.

Is there a better phone that will do this for me? And don't suggest iPhone. I've seen it, used it - it's nice, but it doesn't have buttons and it's a frakin' massive fingerprint magnet.

Are you after a particulr OS? I really like my Palm Treo 750, but it's Windows Mobile, which I will agree isn't everyone's cuppa tea.

Edit: I forgot to add that it does everything you listed above. The camera isn't superb but it's passable. It's got built-in email that syncs with Outlook on a Windows PC. Web browsing is shit with the included Pocket IE, you're much better off going to Opera Mini (and it'll save you $$ too).

Hrm ... I do like WM actually. Never really had any issues with it, and it's been getting better over time.

That Palm has a touch screen too doesn't it? And it's been out for a while ... I have a Creative player for video and music, my phones are tools, not toys!

Does your Treo support GPRS? How about 3G? What network are you with?

Thanks man!

Sorry for the late reply, the dogs needed a walk. :)

Yes, it's got a touch screen that's big and bright, plus a full QWERTY keypad that's backlit. Don't confuse it with the Palm Centro which has got a dinky keypad where all the letters are really squished in together. The Treo's is one of the most spacious I've used, compared to something like a Balckberry, Motorola Q, or Samsung Blackjack.

It's a 3G phone that also supports GPRS. I'm on Telstra Next G and been fortunate enough to always have HSDPA when I've got service, so I dunno how good the data rate is on GPRS alone.

Another useful point is that it now ships with WM6. I originally had WM5 and upgraded about 7 months ago. WM6 is streets ahead of 5.

Here's a link to the Telstra site with specs and pricing:
http://shop.telstra.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10001&catalogId=1165

As far as the handset goes I love it. It does everything I want, and does it well. I've read a couple of reviews and everyone agrees that Palm have done the best implementation of WM onto a smartphone.

The only niggling thing I don't like about it is actually the sync process. You're stuck with using MS ActiveSync, which is not the best piece of software I've used. Also, it forces you to install Outlook as this is the only supported PIM. I'm prepared to live with them, though.

Anyway, don't let me sway you. The best thing to do is go into a phone store and have a fiddle with one. Go as far as asking if you can see how ActiveSync works. There's nothing worse than having your heart set on something only to discover it falls short of your expectations. :)

To be honest, ActiveSync doesn't bother me at all - I haven't bothered with a localised Inbox in years. Everything I do has a web interface and at the moment all my contacts are stored on my phone - should be easy enough to just transfer it using a .csv or somesuch standard file.

IF I have to install Office just to synchronise contacts, I could stand that. But it's no big deal really. And with the Treo 800 around the corner hopefully I can weasel a good deal...

Hrm. Telstra charges like a wounded bull. Did you say you're with Telstra? I've been with Voda since forever, and the best thing is their data rates. See if I can get one from them ...

Yeah, I've seen them advertised at local Voda dealers so shouldn't be a problem. The only reason I'm with Telstra is because I'm in a regional area and need next G coverage. Voda drops out completely about 20Km out of town. :(

Having said that, it's one of the main reasons I installed Opera Mini. Because data's compressed prior to reaching my phone the actual amount that's downloaded is reduced by quite a bit. I'm on an $80/mth plan that has $10 of included data (no idea what the per-kb charge is, tho), and even on a relatively heavy month of browsing I don't go over the limit. If my browsing increases significantly, or I start using the phone as a modem, I'll pick up one of Telstra's data packs with increased limits and decreased charges.

Telstra's data charges are pretty good: 0.002c/kb. And if Opera compresses it, so much the better.

Voda is better tho (IMHO): $1 for 5mins. No download limit. I used to run torrents (albeit, very slowly) off my notebook and phone.

EDIT: awesome. Will have to drop into a Voda store to get details etc. sometime soon.

OK so I couldn't find a Treo anywhere (apparently a short time ago there was a pricedrop to <$400, and they sold out overnight), nor does anyone actually have the e71 yet.

SO after playing with it in-store I got the N95 8GB. Free on my cap ($79 Voda, which interestingly has been upped to $600 credit).

I was impressed with the browsing capabilities, but there were three things that it has over the Palm which really changed my mind:

1) Standard mini-USB plug. Proprietary cables are a thing of the past, get over it!

2) 3.5mm multi-purpose headphone jack. Headphones, headset, TV-out, all using a non-proprietary connection.

3) Familiarity and the OS - nothing to learn, just jump in and go.

HOWEVER there are a few problems that jarr just a bit:

1) Media playing - the music software sucks, seriously. More importantly, you HAVE to use WMP to transfer music - which takes AAAAGES. The same is true of video, I presume. Definitely not saying goodbye to my Zen any time soon!

2) Maps - WTF. According to what peoplep say on the 'net you have to download the maps for the N95 - but it looks to me like the maps are already loaded on my N95 8GB . I have a full street directory which I've used as such a few times to navigate myself around. So why, after half an hour under an open sky with four or five satellites, will it not show my position? WHY!!??

3) ... I'm sure I'll think of something.

Really I'm happy, as I already have my music and video covered. But it would just be nice for the thing to do what it's supposed to be able to do.

From what I can see, the advantages of that phone are similar to the advantages of the Treo I was considering. Voda doesn't offer it on a Contract plan though - only on My Business.

I suppose I could have scored an ABN from a mate or something ... jeez guys that phone looks perfect! Where were you when the thread started!!

*sigh* this sucks. If I didn't have to give the phone I was using back I could have held out for a bit longer. Shit. Ah well, I will survive I suppose. I really did want Windows Mobile and a QWERTY keyboard.

Take-home lesson for today: do not lose/break your phone, thereby forcing you to rely on a borrowed phone which could be reclaimed at any moment.

EDIT:

when did that Samsung come out in .au?

at the moment you don't need an ABN, that could change.

Three now carry it. The E71 that is.

Free on the $49 cap IIRC.

hi all,

i have been looking at these phones for awhile now and can't make up my mind which one i want. either the nokia e71 or the samsung i780? just not sure. gunna buy one this weekend im leaning more towards the i780 atm. just looked better lol

In simple terms: i780 if you want WM6, e71 if you want Symbian.

i780
- 320 * 320 touchscreen
- WM6
- Bunch o' connectivity

e71
- thinnest smartphone, metal construction
- every connectivity option under the sun
- Symbian
- cheaper

Both have GPS, QWERTY and productivity software. If the i780 was offered on the $49 cap, I would go for it. But the e71 does everything I want and is very pocketable and tough. $69/mo for e71 + ~$350 credit + free content + 1GB data? Yes, please! i780 with a similar package would be closer to $99/mo.
