for a while i could put up with it, every now and then id have to wait a few seconds because my computer would suddenly power cyclethe drive in the middle of accessing it.

but now my computer is unusable, keeps restarting, won't boot in safe mode or restore/repair from the windows disk

i think its because the drive is power cyclign while its trying to boot

anything else i could try to see if i can fix the problem
drive that i think is doing it WD 250 gig sat
i've tried changing sata cabloes and ports (on motherboard) and changing from sata power to the older molex power (at differnt times)

other system specs
vista ultimate 64
asus a8n-sli
athlon 3800+
7900 nvidia
maxtor 320 gig sata (as far as i can tell does not power cycle)

The drive is dead. RMA it.

Edit: You really should have returned it before it got to this stage. Hope you've kept your backups up to date.

actually after further testing i think its the motherboard thats on it's way out, it seems my tv-tuner card is power cycling too.

could be the power supply but if had some other issues with the motherboard that i thought were unrelated but now i'm not so sure. the powersupply isn't that old and there doesn't seem enough drain on my system to have such a large effect
