Nice and compact.

My dream use of them would be for someone to make a JBOD unit that allowed you to grow a SSD by simply adding more of these to a rack of them.

Given the formfactor, a blade style chassis much could be built in a single shallow 5.25" bay to hold 24 of them.

Would make for a really nice and quiet approach for progressively growing disk space. Think of a HTPC/PVR with solid state storage that you just keep slotting more in, and it resizes the JBOD volume :)

Power consumption and heat would also be low because at any given time only a couple of the blades would be inuse.

considering the size of the drives, it would be the smallest.

looks damn good to me, the power consumption is fantastic.

I guess PATA is used because that's what the OEMs are using according to their market research - and it may be cheaper to implement with no requirement for Plug & Play etc.

If the market is portable players etc, it'll be what those devices want to use.

The minicard formfactor would also seem to allow enough space to cram it in an expresscard34 slot with a small USB-PATA converter chip.

You can already get them... but they are for a much more expensive market then your looking for, also they are for 19inch rack mountable stations... for ones server/s.

Still I could find a place for this on my desk.... finding the money is the problem.

Also, for those excited and enthused in SSD's, are welcome to come over and read iamthemaxx's "SSD watch" thread.

Using a PATA/IDE interface will keep it in the same play group as the Compact Flash market, which is quite large.
