How good are 15K SAS drives.

I know that the 15K drives are loud (although I'm not entirely sure how loud, but as I understand, loud enough to be annoying), but wouldn't there performance be pretty awesome?

I was thinking of picking up four 300G 15K Cheetahs for about $1000 (yes, that's total not each), and yes they are new (with 12 month warranty), not second hand. I can grab a second hand SAS controller for about $300-400.

This would give me a nice little RAID-5 array with some blistering speed. Given that 10K Velociraptors (also 300Gb) go for about $350 a pop, I would think that these would be a better deal. I know that SAS drives aren't exactly designed for home use, but I would hope to see some benefit using a 4 drive SAS array, over a single 500Gb drive?

FAST, and yes - perfect for RAID 5.

Fast, loud and probably very hot.

These kinds of drives are itnended for servers that have their disks thrashing like crazy pretty much constantly.

For a home PC, I don't think you'd really notice a huge difference between a RAID array using these drives than one using $100 640GB WD SATA disks. Even if benchmarks show what seems to be a dramatic improvement, it's still not necessarily something you'll *notice*.

Without looking at prices, it does sound like a decent deal for what you're getting, but still a waste of money for what you plan on doing with them.

You could buy an 8-port SATA RAID card + 8x WD 650G SATA drives and make a bigger, crazier array that'd probably perform just as well, maybe better, and give you more disk space.

I think you'll find that the $1300 you're looking at throwing at this could be put towards a better part of your system. A 30" LCD monitor, perhaps?

E-Penis?
Don't forget you are going to need a SAS controller and cables for them too, so add that to the price.

$250.00 and up price wise for a controller.

Think he's aware of that aspect aliali, he mentioned in his OP (albeit not the cables).

I think aside from the initial outlay, you need to consider your recurrent costs.

What will happen if you need to replace a drive in the future? If you think you can source another drive at those cheaper prices in the future this might be a non-issue.

Aside from that, +1 to zebra.

If this is for home use, eckythump and Zebra are on the ball.
