Suggest a free CD writing application

I've been using BurnAtOnce to write CDs for a number of years and it's never failed me. Lately, though, it's been exhibiting some oddities that I can't pin down to either faulty discs or the drive failing.

In order to investigate further I'm wondering what other free CD-writing utilities that people use. I'd like to try one or two others to see if they have the same behaviour (points to disc or hardware fault) or if they work properly (points to software fault).

Note that it's only a CD-RW so I don't need DVD-writing capability, but if the app you suggest has both then that's a bonus. :)

BTW - I know that folks are going to say that Nero is probably the best one around, but I can't afford to fork out for a full licence at the moment. Maybe later, but for now I need a free (as in 'beer') application.

Man I just love Ashampoo burning suite, so simple to use it does everything, and unlike nero it is not bloatware. And of course this version is free and works with vista as well.

Why was imgburn not the first one to be mentioned?
Bad Jer, bad! :P

For compiling audio CDs, I use Burrrn (I think that's the correct number of r's). imgburn for everything else.

While you asked for free, and have been given some excellent options, I think this is still worth pointing out.

From MSY's pricelist:
OEM Nero7 Nero 7 Essential Suite DVD Writer software $1
OEM Nero8 Nero 8 Essential Suite DVD Writer software $3

I'm not sure if the OEM differs from the "full version", but it should definitely have all the features you're after, and whether you're a free-software advocate, you can't really gripe at the reasona
bleness of those prices.

That said, I'm still using Nero 6 as it's served me well for many years and I've never felt a need to upgrade. I can't vouch for niceness/shitness of Nero 7 or 8.

Heh. I revisited this thread after a week and I find that everyone...and I mean everyone ...seems to favour ImgBurn. Even Zebra. Good thing I downloaded and installed it. ;-)

ImgBurn for data, Burrrn for audio. Not that I burn audio CDs much anymore.

I swear, this little thing plays music better than the iPod. Can't sort them as well, but at least it's got drag and drop with no iTunes going for it :D

imgBurn doesn't play nicely with my Vista installation, for no really good reason.

EDIT: I love ImgBurn - for everything except actually burning to disks, it's awesome. Creating images, building images, no probs. Maybe it's a hardware issue ... I dunno.

Meh, looking into the other suggestions.

Imgburn.

Although I've been meaning to ask what makes it's burning engine superior to Nero's.
