2x WD6400AAKS RAID-0 advice

I have 2 of these on the way for a new simple system build for myself.

Mostly video editing and photoshopping, so a quad core with 4GB of ram.

Now ideal performance would be achieved from which one of these scenarios:

A) RAID-0, no partitioning, OS drive without much clutter, editing programs on drive.

B) RAID-0, 80GB OS+apps partition, rest scratch/temp file partition

C) My old Seagate 300GB (SATA or SATAII nfi) as OS/apps drive, RAID-0 as pure scratch/temp drive

I'd RAID0 the 640's and use the other as your OS (make sure you backup RAID0 != RAID).
Multi-partitioning the 640 won't give you much.

Mind you, the 640's are pretty nice performers thanks to their densities anyway.

Yeah thats why I chose them, i was gobsmacked when i googled up and found a forums with a user showing the speeds he was getting, this is the answer to my photoshop and video and autopano pro HD limited woes.

i wouldnt really store anything important on them like my video work, photos or anime, anime has a dedicated drive.

When you get it setup, run some benchmarks with HD Tune and post them.

This connection is over a DSL-504T modem which has timeout problems posting to atomic of varying text lengths (including edits), which ive posted about before.. (tried to quote, post length was too long!)

I'd consider separating the OS drive from the apps/data drive. This optimises. The main reason is RAID suystems involving striping (0, 10, 01, 5) are good for throughput but poorer when it comes to access time, so the last thing you want to be doing is sending them searching back and forth between apps, data and swap.

While RAID 0 might benchmark higher, in real worls use, you might be better with using the two drives separately.

If you're willing to add the 300GB to the mix, then the 300GB + RAID should be the best of both worlds.

(on the modem issue, have you checked consistent configuration of the MTU between your PC and the router - and that it's consistent with your selection of PPPoE or PPPoA - that could explain why large uploaded packets are being dropped/mangled - especially if you are using statically allocated IPs there's a risk the PC may be configured differently - DHCP may fix this)
