Nope, unless you put it back in a similar model you're boned.

I thought the whole of RAID was that it copied over the files on the other disk, so that you could just get them off if one failed?

I think that trick depends on the RAID controller. I've done it with an old(er) intel chipset onboard RAID (maybe from an ICH5 or something), so just plug the drive in another PC/external box and see if you can get anything out of it.

Not saying it'll work for you though - I've got NFI what the Thecus uses.

Depends on the RAID type.
If the controller goes you are pretty much boned anyway.

Really? I've never actually used it myself but had heard good things about, I thought it was completely free.

What does it do? scan the drives, say it can rebuild, but then want you to buy it before it actually does so or something?

you can preview the info and use there "inhouse" player to listin to music or view docs... then it says..

save file:
burn file to CD/DVD:
upload to FTP:

then when u click one and it goes to the next screen it says do you want to purchase this program or u can enter an exsisting user name and password...

price is $225 usd

Are you sure?
It says it's COMPLETELY FREE on the site?
Maybe they're lying, but maybe you downloaded the wrong thing or had a mental moment :S

edit: did the NAS itself die? Or did a HDD die? If the latter, you should just be able to plug one in and rebuild?

The OP would indicate to me that the NAS is dead.

yes the nas is dead. it looks like the controller for the SMD has a chip in it probably because of the heat.. its only got a 40mm fan in it
