raid array question, do i have to raid it all?

Hi, ive been running a 320x2 raid array for XP, Striped for speed (thats 0 if i recall right), but i have found that this is all good and well, but dont wanna loose my data (or all of it) if my raid shaggs up.

what i wanna know is, can i raid say 40gigs of each drive from my 320gigers and have the rest like a normal sata drive?
iam thinking just to raid winslows and if i loose that i can just re-install without loosing any of my data.

or MUST i raid the whole drive?

regards

It's RAID 0 too ... if one drive dies, it's all there or nothing as well.

question - what are the warranty periods of a raid controller anyway? if thats going to fail first then there is no point doing raid 1.

Depends on what brand, best off buying some like an Adaptec who will around in the future unlike some yum-cha brand who might not be.

Actually, I think Windows RAID will allow you to RAID partitions. I'm not sure if that's just RAID 1, or RAID 0 too though.

Yeah unfortunately it's all or nothing.
Having long been a user of raid and recently moving to a non raid disk I have to say the effects are minimal.
This is especially the case if like me you are/were only using onboard software raid.
Apparently it is quite a different story with dedicated raid cards.

Depends on the RAID controller.

Some of the chipsets can support it. There was at least one intel south bridge that had a matrix RAID controller built in that allowed you to have 2 HDD and use part RAID 0 and part RAID 1.

This can also be performed by some of the more advanced RAID controller cards which can create volume sets of drives then allocate RAID sets within that volume set.

I wouldn't use onboard RAID.
