hd issue in windows

Hey guys! I have a Samsung SP2504C in an external Antec enclosure but I've been having problems with it. When I copy/move files to it, almost every single time (especially if the file is large) windows simply loses connection with it (it says transfer failed and I can no longer find it in device manager) and the hd indicator is not on. If I turn it off (since it was on despite the fact that the indicator is off) and on again, Windows finds it again with no problems and I can try and copy/move files again which usually works the second time.

If I don't transfer files to/from it, then, in a similar manner windows suddenly gives me this pop-up as if I connected a new USB device but it was obviously connected all this time so yet again it loses it and finds it again.

Is it a software or hardware issue?

Thx in advance.

I'm using WinXP and have another external drive which works well.

Sounds like a power supply or switch problem on the enclosure. Or possibly a drive problem. Pull the drive from the enclosure and test it hooked up directly to the PC, or in another enclosure.

Might be the USB cable, or dodgy internal cable if you're using the front port.

Try it on a motherboard port and try a different cable - proper shielded USB2 cables are a must.
