The "SSD watch" thread

One guy purchased the 64GB OCZ Core model and has been having some problems. He seems to be having the same problems as i was having with the transcend SSD. Possibly related to both models using MLC flash memory rather than SLC?

Specifically look at this graph (same flaw):

I've just pre-ordered the 64G OCZ Core series. Hopefully it'll be in-stock soon.

The performance shown doesn't bother me that much as it's for my mini-note (2GB & WinXP)and the read performance improvement will be nice. I'm not particularly surprised by the poorer performance in writes of small data given the structure of the hardware. I'm not sure what the real world impact of that will be.

I'm keen to hear how you get on with it, i'm still considering it for a games drive.

Keep us updated :)

MLC over SLC.. got it!

And yeh please keep us apprised stadl on the core series SSD's performance... also where you got it from, and for what price!

I've ordered it from auspcmarket where it's $358.60 delivered (I think it's $363 if you don't have a discount with them).

I'd prefer an SLC drive but the $s don't make sense for personal use. I'll accept the shorter lifespan of several years instead of decades, and happily know that in a couple of years I could replace it with something larger, faster and better and still be in front compared to buying a premium SLC drive today.

OCZ have not indicated that the core series is MLC, it's just assumed by everyone given the capacity and price.

Yeah apparently a lot of the OCZ Core series suffer from random freezes, kind put me off them :|

Guess ill be waiting till the end of the year to decide which SSD ill be getting

I'm afraid I'm with sceptre on this one - I've been watching and waiting for the tech to get to the point where it's as reliable as HDDs at usable sizes.

Question though: would it be worth grabbing a tiny SSD (or even one of those CF-SATA converter dohickeys) to use as a massive swapfile? I've just started doing some reasonably serious imaging work and 2GB RAM gets used up WAY too fast.

NOICE!!!!

They must be the SLC versions yeah..? Im guessing that by the indications of size given on the site!

They'll probably still be MLC, assuming they're going to be priced similar to the current series

From the OCZ site

"*Consumers may see a discrepancy between reported capacity and actual capacity; the storage industry standard is to display capacity in decimal. However, the operating system usually calculates capacity in binary format, causing traditional HDD and SSD to show a lower capacity in Windows. In the case of SSDs, some of the capacity is reserved for formatting and redundancy for wear leveling. These reserved areas on an SSD may occupy up to 5% of the drive’s storage capacity. On the Core V2 Series the new naming convention reflects this and the 30 is equivalent to 32GB, the 60 is equivalent to the 64GB and so on. "

http://www.ocztechnology.com/products/flash_drives/ocz_core_series_v2_sata_ii_2_5-ssd

So they're the same sizes as the old series, just marketed differentlly (better?)

Yeah but it seems that they have worked on the speed of the write.. so it may be worth grabbing an MLC SSD, it looks like it will perform quite admirably.

Yea. Haven't found many comparisons, but here is one. OCZ Core (MLC 120-140/80-93), SuperTalent MasterDrive MX (MLC 120/60-80), and Samsung Sata2(SLC 100/80)

http://blog.laptopmag.com/in-depth-with-the-ocz-core-series-low-cost-ssd

I'm surprised how well the SuperTalent drive did

Well, it arrived and I've had my image moved vacross to it. performance is faster than the 7200 320gig drive i used to have.

I haven't done any measurements but it does seem snappier on boot etc. I'd say disk is not really a bottleneck on this system anymore :)

The big advantage: there's no spin-up delay as with mag laptop drives, with that no noise.

Can't comment too much on the battery life extensions. the mini note isn't the longest lasting due to the small battery so there's not that much scope for improvement.

It seems the heat benefits might be better than expected because the mini-note draws air in next to the HDD and blows it across the CPU so the gain is cooler air across the CPU.

this is a web/email machine, grunt was never going to be a priority for this system - although i like it being more responsive - shock proofing and stability is the goal.

You can't defrag SSD's can you? Doesn't it wear down it's lifespan?
