What's this double layer talk for the 108? I still assume if I were to get some media capable of DL that I could do a straigt forward copy of a retail DVD-9 disc onto the DL media using my 108?

If not, what's the process of doing such a thing?

Wormy...

It is REALLY that simple, yes.

i. Make sure you are running latest firmware on 108 (not doing so gives me ground to hoof-smack people btw)

ii. Grab the LATEST version of DVD Decrypter

iii. Grab the movie, which you own, which you wish to backup to DL media.

iv. MODE--> ISO --> READ

v. Take DL disc

vi. Pop in drive...

vii. MODE--> ISO --> WRITE

cook it back!

Nothing could be more simple. ;)

Oh, I know how to do it(or I would if I went to doom9), I was just wondering why you made an effort to point out that the 108 can only do double layer (whatever that is) but the 109 can do dual layer...

I assume it's just a different name because one is dones in + and the other -?

There is a point to this madness! :)

The DVR-108 hardware can write Dual Layer DVD+R DL media only at a maximum rate of 4x.

The DVR-109 hardware can write Dual Layer DVD+R DL media AND Double Layer DVD-R DL media at a maximum rate of 6x.

SIGNIFICANT differences exist between the two formats! Significant PRICE differences exist in the DVD-R DL media, which will be cheaper upon release (in *this* country anyways!) than DVD+R DL media.

Helps?

Perfect sense.

I haven't done any looking for DVD+R DL media. What kind of price am I looking at?

It doesn't matter right now, as my grandma (such a sweetie :P) bought me 3 * 20 spindles of Laser DVD+R media. I've only backuped one movie so far and it worked fine on my pioneer stand alone and my cousins Xbox. Good enough for me.

* Between $9 and $11 for the DVD+R DL media.

* Between $6 and $8 for the DVD-R DL media, when its out here.

Yes. 8.55GB per disc, of course. =

Fabrication process of dual/double layer media requires fine precision, hence $$$.

I’m looking at updating my old LG drive, is the DVR-109 defiantly the way to go?

And how about cost? I have one local for $108 sounds to cheep for such a good drive.

Pioneer became VERY competitive recently, in an attempt to crush the rest of the market (seems it is working). Do not let the price turn you off. It is a premium writer, at a less than premium price! :-D

I don't know anyone currently that would recommend another drive, other than the BenQ potentially...

It really is the writer with EVERYTHING going for it, apart from DVD-RAM writing .

So the Pioneer the best current burner?

I've got one scoped out for $98, so that's a toss up between that or a 200GB HDD for $165.

Are the read speeds really good? I do a fair bit of ripping, and speed is a handy thing to have ;)

Damn approaching LANs, and a limit of $400 to last me for a week until payday. Chop 100 off for rent, and another 100 for fuel. Shit *P

Phwoaaaaaaaaar....$98....STEAL!

Long and the short, the drive has the capability to rip upto 12-->16x. It is FAST, provided you use the correct firmware. DAMN fast.

Hell, its one HELL of a ripper and a magical writer. You won't regret it, with out 109@A09XL mod. ;)

I've seen my old Pioneer 106? player rip at 13x. 'Tis rare.
I just ask because I remember a post by someone mentioning some drives having woeful rip speeds (In real terms), and that's something I want to avoid.

I suppose it mostly depends on the media. I've only seen my 40x12x48x rip at 48x one single time. God I jismed my pants at that sight ;D

I think I'll get the Pioneer then, and do lots of burning pre-LAN. Now, where's the guide on how to spot the quality media gotten to...

Zebra - Awesome thread, thanks to you I've now purchased the mighty 109, should get it soon :p

My only problem is firmware for the drive. I'm not sure what the best one for it is. Can you post in your first post the best firmware update(s) for the drive (and the other drives I guess) so people like myself can come here to find out the best firmware for their drive without doing research and spending lots of time in forums trying to find out what's what?

yes Zebra thanks to your relentless Pioneer pushing i have just wasted $200 on one of these shitty 109s

audio CDs burnt with this have skipping sounds, the tray ejects when it feels like it, the damn thing is loud as all hell, and every next DVD i burn wont work in other peoples players

JUST KIDDING! (i dont have one yet).

but seriously, a very helpful thread indeed. thanks
