Corsair dominator 1066 vs OCZ 1100

I'm in the process of pricing a new system and I'm torn between two RAM kits - two pairs of 1gb Dominator sticks, or a pair of 1100mhz 2gb OCZ sticks.

Buying the dominator RAM would cost me around $100 extra, but assuming I was to overclock my system is there any reason to expect I would see much of a speed difference for the extra outlay?

The rest of the system is a Gigabyte X48-DQ6 MOBO, an e8400 with aftermarket cooling and a 4870X2

Cheers guys.

you can get 2x 2G (as in 4G) Corsair Dominator kits, you know..... (I'm running just that)
;)

2x2GB DDR2-800 for ~$85

That's what you should get. Any brand will do.

The Corsair/OCZ RAM will give you better performance, but you'll only know this because your benchmark scores are higher, not because the system actually appears to run any faster.

And spending so much extra on RAM which will give you a non-noticable performance increase while only getting the E8400 seems insane to me.

Save the money on the RAM and put it towards the E8600 or the Q9550 instead.

And you would want to because 4 x 1GB sticks would put a lot of stress on the North Bridge, and you would probably not even get to 1100MHz.

I'd go for the 2x2 Dominators. I've got the 4x1s, and they run quite well, but you'd be able to squeeze more from the 2x2s.

Eckythump also makes a good point.

And avoid the 1000MHz OCZ sticks; I once had a set of 1000MHz OCZ Platinum sticks that would give me the shits because the FSB:RAM ratios would always be funky, and the system would be unstable as anything at stock CPU clock.

my 2x 2G sticks of Corsair Dominator are rock solid stable (12 hours of ORTHOS) at 1066Mhz with 2.2v. I'm running my E8400 at 3.84G 24/7, not a hint of it ever crashing - of the 2x I'd say get these - you get the extra cooling to play with as well.

check put crucial ballistix tracers they use the same chips as the dominators and are in most cases cheaper.

First of all im a fool - I meant to say gskill not OCZ >_> I'm assuming that doesn't have too much bearing on people's thinking...

I didn't even think to ask that - the pricing seems to be a bit better on the 2x2g as well - maco has them for $205, so thats worth serious thought.

I didn't realise this was an issue, but I suppose it makes sense - eapecially on overclocked RAM.

I figured that would be one of the advantages of the cheaper RAM... its factory clocked at 1100, so I'd assume it would be stable. From what I read though it doesn't overclock particularly well.

I thought that spending the bit extra to get the faster gskill RAM would save a potential bottleneck, but I definitely had my doubts about forking out for the dominator. As for the processor, i'll be OC'ing the bejeesus out of the E8400, so I thought I could probably steer clear of a faster dual core. I considered a quad, but decided that for the time being I'd see more benefit from a dual.

At this point I think I'll compromise and get the gskill, but I'll know for sure by tomorrow, so I'll let you know what I do.

tbh... unless you're hardcore, you're going to be happy either way. stick it in your machine and forget about it.

i had the same dilema a few weeks back (but my dilema was actually with ocz, not gskill) and i went with the ocz only because the corsairs were harder to get. havent regretted it - i got the 1066 and running 1106 on a daily basis. will be pushing it more once i o/c my cpu more.

only thing is, it would have been nice to stare into my open case and see the dominator fans just coz they look so damn cool (pun!).. but the ocz xtc ram coolers provide enough bling.

yeh, the Corsair Dominator cooling fans look pretty sweet, but, normally, I wouldn't spend that much.....I just had a bit of extra cash at the time, and thought, wtf! why not.
prior to that, I was happy with the el cheapo A-Data, and their dog dick pink RAMsinks.

gyah - 2x2 corsair it is!

I'm using the cosmos s, so you won't see the ram, but I figured it wasn't that much extra. That plus the fact that this new rig was just about to send me broke... I figured I might as well do it right and bankrupt myself completely. =p

You would've been, and if you weren't, I'd guarantee that it was a purely mental thing. It's all placebo.

Enjoy your new system, all the same.
