Hey guys my mate is building a new system and wants ddr3 and sli without having to go all the way with a 790i, i was wondering if there are any other options as he would like to avoid spending that much if possible, cheers

pm marx and he can give your friend a mile long list of problems with ddr3 and that chipset.

best bet would be ddr2 and evga 750i ftw

Why SLI? any particular reason? and why DDR3? unless you go for something around DDR2-1800 you can get pretty much equal performance from DDR2.

Yeah. DDR2 + 750i FTW would be my suggestion if he really has to have SLI.

At the moment, the ATI HD4870 is where it's at bang-for-buck. One of those would probably serve him pretty well, and if he gets a Crossfire board he can add a second should he feel the need.

I'd recommend the Gigabyte GA-X48-DS4.

I believe there's a GA-X48T-DS4 which is the DDR3 version, should he really feel the need to piss some money away. It'll still be a little while before DDR3 is really worth considering.

Well if you want DDR3 and SLI then you really don't have a choice.
Take it from me, who has now built about 6 systems based on the 790i Ultra - the company I build for professionally has decided that we are not going to sell any more systems with the 790i Ultra due to consistent problems.

If you want SLI, like the guys said, grab a 750i FTW, they are occasionally plagued by problems and have typical nvidia problems with memory controller, but are a pretty good board.

Alternatively - Grab an X48 and go crossfire or grab a P45 and 4870X2 for some great power and stability.

NB: I have only finally moved from nvidia chipset to intel and am much much happier :)

uyeah i pretty much told him the same thing, my choice to be honest was 780i, and it is hard to go past the 4870 for bang for your buck, hopefully after seeing your answers he will change his mind. thanks for the help guys.
