RAM Speed Questions Guys...

OK, so I have some questions for everyone.

So my Mother has a decent... Crappy computer, similar to my old HP for those that help me build my new Machine.

So, She has the HP a1600n Desktop computer. with a AMD X2 3800+ 2.0 GHz with 1GB RAM and 250GB HD with Windows XP SP2.

OK, so the PC's been runnin slow. today I came to help, I did a Virus scan/clean, I did a Defrag, ran CCleaner, and a few other things. I opened it up, had an Inch of dust so I sprayed that all out.

So, I ordered some New Ram off Newegg.com to give her a little boost. I got this.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820178095

It's nothing special, it's all she needs though. If someone wants to confirm this. the actual HP website says her computer takes PC2-4200 Ram. So thats what I got..

So I installed it today, & I got the BSOD. (Hate that SHIT)
I got error DRIVER_CORRUPTED_MMPOOL
Restart, another BSOD. Restart again and I enter BIOS. I go in, and the BIOS is reading that it's PC2-5300. WTF??

So thats what the BIOS says. It's running faster than what I bought. is this normal.?

the Box says PC2-4200 533 MHz / 400 MHz yet it's running at 667 MHz right now in Memtest. Ya I'm running Memtest to check the RAM's stability.

So is this just that I need to adjust the speed settings, or did I get faster RAM than I paid for. Thats like me buying ddr2-800 and it running at 1066 by default.

So in the HP BIOS I can't access anything really. I can change settings and everything, but the CPU settings and the RAM settings are ALL greyed out. So I'm not really sure what to do.. Should I send it back and get some different RAM that should be pc2-4200. or what should I do.. I'm a little stuck cuz I can't change the settings. unless I can some other way other than in BIOS.

Thanks guys,

Cheers!

If you're running RAM of 2 different rated speeds, the BIOS should set the computer to run at the speed/latencies of the lower rated module.

Some motherboards are really picky about mixed RAM brands/types and some have stability issues if you have more than 2 modules installed.

Your best bet might be to manually set the speed and timings in the BIOS.

Then verify stability with a stand-alone CD with Memtest (like the Ultimate Boot CD). At least that way you won't be risking Windows becoming corrupted from a crashed boot.

lol did you not read the entire post.. I can't adjust the speeds in the BIOS.. it's GREYED out and I can't select them.

The computer came stock with 2x512 sticks of what I'm assuming was pc2-4200 because thats what the system is rated for.. I didn't mix anything because I know thats not a good idea.. I pulled the original RAM out.. and I then added the 2 new sticks I bought. so now it's only got the 2x1 sticks of pc2-4200 I bought.. but they are showing up in the BIOS, and under CPU-Z as 5300 and running at 667 instead of 553. So I'm thinkin they are to fast for the PC, and makin it crash.. and I'd just simply underclock them to 533 and be all good, but I can't.

HP disable's things in the BIOS. I can adjust boot menu and options, I can do other things. but in the BIOS any settings with the CPU like multi's or speed, and anything with the RAM are GREY and I cannot move down to them. So I can't adjust anything. Is there any way I can change the RAM settings OTHER than in the BIOS. Can I use a program. I doubt it.

Let me know what you think.. otherwise I'll just throw the old 1GB sticks in for now.

and I know you shouldn't mix ram, so I'm not. but acording to what you just said, if I do, the system should set the computer to run at the speed of the lower rated module.. so maybe I should try leaving them in, and adding the other 2 old ones. for a total of 3GB and see if they lower them all down. Thats my only guess as of now. I hate HP.

lol let me know what you think..

thanks!

the old Ram from before was pc2-4200.. so I added the same kind, just more.. so this should be working fine.

also I looked at the actual specs for the motherboard, and it supports BOTH pc4200, and pc5300.. so either way this RAM i bought should work. The board takes PC2-4200.. so thats what I bought, but it's showing up at 5300 in BIOS. and I'm getting blue screen.. but both of those speeds should work fine. anyone have any idea's on what I can do to stop this.

Thanks!

Maybe you have DDR2-667, memtest is rarely wrong.

You've done everything right ... it's weird.

thats what I was thinkin.. maybe I bought pc2-4200.. and I actually got 5300..

But even if so, then that still SHOULD work as the Motherboard specs says it supports BOTH PC2-4200 and PC2-5300

right? but I'm still having problems.. I'm going to add the old back to it and see what happens. lol

this is lame!

yup.. it's not mine, it's my Mothers.

and ya, so I pulled the new RAM out, and added the old back in. and it works fine. I think something must be wrong with the PNY pc2-4200 ram I purchased. the ram did indeed Pass over 2 hours of memtest. but either way something was not right. so I guess I might just return it and try a brand I know and trust like G-skill or Corsair.

Have you tested each stick individually to ensure that it isn't just a faulty stick.
If both test fine by themselves try running it in single channel mode.

ya I tried just one and they both got me blue screens.

I'm just going to RMA them, it's my moms computer anyways. they don't use it Tons.. I counld't change any settings or I'd a tried single channel mode. everything that has to do with RAM and CPU in the BIOS is greyed out and not available to be changed. so I couldn't try underclocking it or anything. really lame, I hate HP computers

I imagine the RAM you got is fine, and it's just the motherboard being retarded and running it at 667 when it should be running it at 533.

If there are 4 RAM slots, try running the 2 new with the 2 old sticks. Mixing RAM brands isn't a huge deal, really. It's better not to, but rarely an issue if you do.

If there are only 2 RAM slots, try one of the old sticks with one of the new. See how that goes.

And I don't think the brand of RAM is likely the culprit here, I'd say it's just a retaded HP BIOS. Get a pair of DDR2-667 sticks and you should be sweet. The board won't run them faster than that, and if they run slower, they won't mind at all and will be stable.

But post back, I'm very curious about the results of using both old & new together.

(And never, ever let your mother buy a HP/compaq/IBM/Acer/... computer again. :))

ya I know. HP sucks ass... they limit everything.

It's got 4 slots. it's a decently new computer. only about 14 months old. lol.

Ya I don't think it's the RAM either, I think it's the board bein lame, but even if thats the case. why is the board say it supports 6667 if it can't.? cuz it says it supports both. so since these are not 553, but runnin higher. I should still be ok. but I'm not.

I was thinkin about giving this a try.. I've already asked for a Refund through Newegg.com. but I guess if I dont' do it within 14 days they just assume you changed your mind. So I think tomorrow I might try using all 4 sticks for a total of 3GB

I will give it a try and see if It's stable or if I get BSOD's still and I'll post back with my results.. although I used to have the same computer. and mine had 1GB also, and I got 2x1GB of 667 RAM, added it, and it worked GREAT.. and then right before i sold it I added the old 1GB in for a total of 3. and it ran perfectly fine..

I'll let ya know how it goes.. thanks!

ive got an old pentium 3 500/512mb sdram/nvidia riva tnt2 64/8gb hdd with windows xp sp3 which ive had for 9 years and still runs as smooth as butter so i dont see why you even need to upgrade anything unless of course your old lady does alot of multitasking, all you need is a clean install of windows and some minor tweaking of the os aswell as run cleans moderately.

I think the RAM you have *is* 533, but for whatever braindamaged reason, the PC is trying to run it at 667 and it's not happy being overclocked that much. That's why I think if you were to throw DDR2-667 sticks in there, they should work just fine.

That said, brand name PCs have always had a reputation for shitty RAM support. A lot better these days, but still not great.

Well, I could do a new load of Windows.. thats a good idea. but the tweaking she does not like.. she gets all worried. She wants it all normal. so whatever.

and ecky, I see your point again, but why would it TRY to run it at 667 when it's not 667.. and when the original ram was not 667.. it's never known that number. lol. there's no reason it should be tryin to run at that speed.. I guess I could try another set of 667 and see if that works. but before I return it I'm going to throw the new in with the old and see if the PC downlocks it all to the slowest Module, in that case would be the speed of the original 4200.. if that works then cool, if not I'll return it. I will do it tomorro. I've been outa town camping. so I'll actually try it tomorrow and let you guys know how that goes with the PC tryin to run it all at the slowest chips speed.

Thanks for the thoughts tho guys!

Update*

So. I bought PC2-4200 and it shows up as PC2-5300 and tries to run at 667 instead of 533, it's making the system get BSOD's.

OK, so i decided to give it a try. I Kept the old original PC2-4200 533 ram in the computer. So I left it in the system, and I added the new ram to it. and it works fine. No problems, no BSOD.

I know it's not recommended that you use different RAM brands, or sizes. but I'm doing both. and it works fine, hopefully it works out for a while. The ram is all showing up in BIOS running at PC2-4200 now. so I'm all good.

Thanks for the info to those that said the RAM modules would run at the speed of the slowest chip, cuz it works fine.

Thanks again.

Cheers!

Another update.. The RAM just passed Memtest for over 5 hours with no errors. So I'm good. But the old ram is 533, the new is 667. but the computer makes it all run at the slowest modules speed. but for some reason it's all running at 572 MHz.

Little faster, but fine with me. as long as it works out ok in the long run. :)
