Overclocking the hardest CPU...the Phenom 9500...

Well, I couldn't resist a challenge with everyone going on with the Core 2 Duos/Quads so I decided to challenge myself into overclocking my Phenom 9500. So here are some results I found out about it.

1) wPrime doesn't work with this processor for some unknown reason. It works on the Athlon X2 I had before but not this one...strange. I'll have to ask the guys about this one...

2) Overclocking does give it some benefit as shown as below...
http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm06=7842828 <- overclocked

http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm06=7683570 <- not overclocked

EDIT: Use the drop down tab to find the first result :(

3) SuperPi is still slow as compared to the Core 2s due to the insane speeds the Core 2s are capable of and even the older Athlon X2s...

So that's that. I'll probably try again when I have more time. I'm guessing this core might be okay but who knows...

hmm seems that card is rather bottlenecked.

That is very strange that wPrime won't work, it was fine for me on two separate Phenoms.

Looks pretty good though, you got a nice increase in SM2 when you OC'd.

You can probably push that a bit more, get the bus speed closer to 245 if you have a decent cooler and mobo :)

Yeah, I could possibly hit 240MHz on bus but due to time, I couldn't go higher. I'll probably hit 245 next week so watch this space :D

jesus, that's just sad.... :-(

even my present opty 165 when pressed did superpi in 29.297 on air, although in deference it still shaved over 2 seconds off competing amdx2 cpu's

new isn't necessarily better for amd i guess

That's a pretty sad SuperPI, my Merom T5600 does 1M in about 30 seconds at stock speed (1.8Ghz).

Well, in my defence, the Phenom 9500 isn't what's called a complete package. I think it's more of an engineering sample for AMD than else. A test bed. I'm guessing the newer 9*50s would be a better overclocker.

Weirdly, most people can overclock to about 3.0GHz using this CPU so it is possible but it just depends on your luck. Mine is currently crapping out at 235MHz bus which is really sad. If I take it any further, it'll reboot and have a hissy fit before restarting using the previous good config.

Sorry for the bumpage and double post but I should post up what's happened over the past few weeks.

1) The CPU doesn't like high multipliers combined with high bus so after a bit of experimentation and admittedly, a lot of swearing/CMOS resets, the CPU is yielding a lot of surprises. Currently, it's been sitting at 255MHz * 10 multi so that's higher than I expected. But voltage has been upped for it @ 1.325v. At least it's not a toaster as compared to the Pentium 4s...

2) wPrime still doesn't want to play nice so that's a bummer. The guys suggested that it could be either the overclock is unstable or something else is buggering it.

3) 3DMark yields a very slight increase but still nothing compared to the Core 2s.
http://service.futuremark.com/resultComparison.action?resultId=7683570&resultType=14 <- this is compared to the original run. The previous overclocked run had about 10233 so this is probably the best result I can do.

4) SuperPi is still slow but it's getting there. Maybe disabling cores might help out...
