Yo.
I tried to OC my cpu to 3GHz but my pc refuses to boot.
The highest it will boot at is 2.7, and even then it fails the first time until i tell it to retry.

Any tips for a newcomer to overclocking?

Set the RAM multiplier or whatever to a lower value. Should be just under the FSB setting. The correct value should put the RAM at about 800MHz

Are you raising the voltage at all?

Bump it up a few notches (like two or three) and see if it POSTS. If not, rinse and repeat :)

Try not to go over 1.4V, because you should be well and truly at 3GHz by that amount of voltage.

lol, how awesome your tag is Frunj. :)

I have an E6600 that i took to 3.4ish Ghz, struggled all of the way there, sits on 3.0GHz happily though, at 1.3vcore

there a bit of a iffy board. Also depends on your stepping some CPUs moan and groan every 100mhz steps.

3.2-3.4 was easily doable tho. The memory proves to be the main issue, until you work out the speeds for yourself there's a calculator here to help:

Make sure to update BIOS, just be wary of killing it from flashing. NB shouldnt need any raise in voltage at all.

I can get mine to 3.6GHz (it'll boot at 3.8, but Vista whinges) fairly stably on around ~1.4V, but I have to pull all sorts of tricks in the BIOS, and in the end it's really not worth the hassle.

I'd keep it at that level but my RAM doesn't agree with it too well, sadly.

For overclocking this board fails epically. Every BIOS that was around had some issue with overclocking or functions.

Still 3ghz isnt outta the question :)

How is it that you can't get an E6600 to 3ghz?

I was sad when mine wouldn't post at 3.6 :P

Oh well, its pretty stable at 3.42, 100% stable at 3.2

I dunno, but my board just refused to boot.
I was confused as well, just assumed this board sucks. :P

Guess i'll just have to trial and error it to 3GHz.

Reb1rth,
I've got an E6420 (266x8, 1.32v), but I ran into similar probs, until I realised my System Voltage Control was set to Auto & boosting my Vcore too high.

I set it to Manual earlier today, kept the default voltage levels, slightly overclocked the CPU (333x7) & an hour later in OCCT, things were good.

Trying for 333x8 now & crossing fingers...

With my E6402, I couldn't actually boot with anything higher than 3.2GHz, however when using software within windoze I got a max of 3.84GHz. Though, I wouldn't advise that to anyone, extremely high Vs to get there.
