So I just started overclocking my 8800GTS

Well I am completely new to overclocking, and after reading sora3's article in the graphics forum I decided to explore this unknown world of overclocking, and pushing these expensive pieces of metal we buy to their breaking point.

However, I don't want to break the piece of metal which is an 8800GTS. This is my first test and I have compiled a very short list of results, far from complete.

CORE MHZ 3D Mark 06 Score
513 (Default) 8292
524 8241
533 8405
543 8330
553 8442
563 8449
574 8424

I am just wondering, my core temp hasn't gone about 80 yet, and I certainly want to keep it under 85. But how far should I go before I start tampering with the Memory Clock, and any feedback or tips would be appreciated :)

As far as you can :-)

Though I generally play with them together, along with the shader. And remember that the shader should be linked to th core, sometimes when unlinked, you can get worse performance.

When you start getting artifacts ... no, not the kind in a museum!

Is the temperature the key here? as long as the card stays cool damage wont occur?>

Yes, keep thing cool. I don't know what the "safe" temp for a 8800GTS is.

I am quite happy with the results, I tried one more up but it froze... so I think I am getting to the limit of the card, however, The temp didn't break 70, mind you I had the fan at 90%, but still, after doing some research 80 or over is dangerous for the 8800GTS

I don't mean to rain on your parade... But I would be setting the fan speed at a level where the sound doesn't annoy you and use that as you temperature reading, unless you game with headphones on that is.
I'm assuming the fan is very loud at 90%, I haven't actually heard one personally :)

I am just excited maccdaddy... this is all very new to me. the audio from music or games tends to override the sound of the fan.
The next step is to learn how to overclock the CPU

Hmm... so what your saying is there's a bottleneck?
and its because of my CPU or because of what the CPU's running at?

He is saying that your cpu is a huge bottleneck for a card that powerful.

Nah, I don't think the CPU is a bottleneck. Do some real game benchies instead of e-Peen 3DMark. ;)

I'll see if I can run some benchmarks comparing my 4200+ to my Q6600 (I'll disable two cores so that it's an E6600 really) and use the same graphics card and get back to you on the results :-)
