AMD 6000+ X2 how far can I go?

Did a search and could'nt find anything in here, sys is in tag, cpu being cooled by TMG A1 thermaltake.

Had it at 3375mhz and voltage at 1.424v and it did'nt mind a bit, temps rose to 58 degrees (normal 52degrees under load), remember my sli config is under the cpu so that raises temps too.

In bios I lowered the ht link speed to 800 which when I oc with a 225 bus it took it to 900 ht speed, still under the 1000 it normally runs at.

So plenty of room to move, just want to know of anyone with experience with these chips, how hot can they run before exploding and how high did they get them on air cooling?

Cheers.

I think others here who have owned the 6000+ and 6400+ have found they run a lot hotter than the 5600+.

Yeah they do run hotter.

Found some blokes who had them to 3.6ghz on air.

I just gave it a run at 3.5ghz @ 1.4v, she booted but was'nt stable.

Think I need some better ram to get higher then this, as most of my stability issues keep coming down to the ram, I have to keep underclocking it to get it stable.

You do realise that very rarely do you see people with X2 6000+'s over 3.2-3.3GHz. K8 architecture is pretty much capped there on overclocks. 3.6GHz must have come from very lucky chips is all I can think of. And yes it might be a good idea to replace the ram.

+1 to the luckiness of 3.6GHz, also +1 to the expected overclock speed level.

it reminds me of the phenom 9850 @ 3.71GHz on water with 1.4 something volts.

very rare (in fact it was the highest recorded in the world), just a very lucky chip.

Well this chip will run all day at 3300mhz without any worries, and no volt increase, so maybe it is a good chip?

Let you know how I go with it.

And the main reason people cant get past the 3.2ghz barrier with these I think comes down to not underclocking the HT link, cause when you just overclock the bus to say 225mhz the HT link goes up with it, making it very hot.

If you set the HT link lower like 800mhz and then overclock the bus to 225mhz it then raises the HT link automatically to 900mhz.

I am pretty sure this is the key to getting more out of this series, and this is backed up on the MSI site for my board, they did the same thing and achieved really good results.

And as stated it booted at 3.5ghz just was'nt stable, a bit more tweaking and I reckon it will be stable.

okay, well 3.3GHz with stock voltage sounds positive.

the best thing about buying the nvidia 9800gtx wasnt buying it... it was telling all the ati fanboys that i did!

Ok, update, have the new ram, made a difference too, much more stable.

But to run it at 3.5ghz you need to really up the voltage, to around 1.6v and then she runs really hot, around 68 degrees, so I stopped it there, as you could'nt run it too long at these temps.

So the real limit was just over 3400mhz, from memory I think it was 3410mhz, that was the real working limit where I could run 3dmark etc and the system being stable and not overly hot.

Still not bad from this chip considering the 90nm architecture.

3.3 is pretty good for a K8 (or K9 whatever bollocks amd call it) on air that isnt an opteron, if you want to go higher really all you can do is look at a BE Phenom, or a core 2 *hides from fanboys*

people are not fanboys if they trust company X because they had little success with company Y or simply they could not afford company Y at the time of the build.

Yeah at the time of purchase I knew that these chips were running close to the end of there limits, but the core2duo stuff was only new at the time I bought it, so went for this chip with the platinum board, few months later realised I could have overclocked the snot out of an intel chip, but still really happy with my system.
