Overclocking my Q6700....???

OK, So I've been messing with my system for a while. I got it where I wanted, with a Fairly ok OC.. and with a Reasonable Temp that I was ok with. So now my Q6700 has been at 3.2GHz for a while now (Cuz 3.2's temp of 28 C I love.) I had it at 3.66 for a few days. Just a little to hot for me. So it's at 3.2 GHz, and when I run Prime. It fails in seconds and says the Rounding is .05 when expected at .04 or less.. I've got this before. but now, when it fails. Core 4 stops.. and Prime keeps running all other 3 cores at the 100%. So my 4th Core stops almost right away. why? and in OCCT same thing happens. I get a Crash Code 1, or 4.
Now I went down to 3.0 and all tests Pass.. I even went up to 3.33, and 3.4 and both of those, both tests pass. only at 3.2 do I get this failure rate... So whats the deal? does my CPU just not like 3.2 GHz or what. I'm a little new to OC'n. I'm using the same Voltage on 3.2 as I was on 3.4 GHz. is it possible it's getting to much on 3.2 or no?

I would stay at 3.33 or 3.4 GHz, but the temps are more than I'd like (I'm Picky.) going from 3.2 to 3.33 my temps idle from 28-30 to 38-40 C. Big Jump for such a small difference. So does anyone have any idea's here.. why would ONLY 3.2GHz be failing tests?? and should I just deal with the temps and stay at 3.4 any thoughts would be nice..

Thanks!

Sometimes chips can be really odd at certain speeds, just because it's unstable at 3.2Ghz doesn't mean it'll be it's limit. I.e. My chip doesn't like 405FSB, has to be 407 or 405 or higher.

How fast you running your Q9450 c0nc0n?

xguntherc, you'd realise that at a certain point, a CPU does not increase heat with the speed in linear but exponentially. Meaning, just because you raise a little clocks at the same intervals will mean that heat will increase at the same intervals.

If you would like to run 3.4GHz, posting idle and load temps would be nice.

I'm guessing 10 x 340?

ya I see what you mean concon.. so say I'm at 3.2 by moving my fsb to 1280, maybe it woulb be ok at 1284 so my oc was 3.22GHz and tech, I just OC it in the BIOS, really easy. and I have my fbs set to 1280 to get my oc to 3.2 GHz, then It's at 1333 to get up to 3.33 GHz. so I'm not exactly sure what I should do.

When I Oc it to to 3.4GHz the idle temps are around 38-40C just a lil bit to high for my liking. and the load will probably be pretty close to 60

Idle 38-40 isn't bad. My Core 1 idles 39 while the others are roughly 30. It's odd but true :P

You don't know how much it load until you load it. Run wPrime 1024m.

Ya I kno 38 or so is not bad.. but it's a little more than I'd like. thats all.. How much is H2O??? or any liquid cooling. and is it worth it??? what kind of difference does that make.

right now, at 3.2 GHz with Prime failing and core 4 stopping. everytime I run Prime with 3.2 GHz core 4 stops runnings and only 1-3 are bein tested. and why do 1-3 keep bein tested after one fails.. not sure why 4. maybe 4 doesn't like 3.2 GHz but thats where I am now. and idle is 32 or so. and right now with Prime after 6 passes of 1024 my temps are 49, 50, 47, 45. So at 3.2 GHz thats about my Load temps. Those are ok i guess. I just don't want them at 40 on idle like they are at 3.4

I can comfortably do 3.4Ghz at 1.35v but I've yet to try higher because my AS5 isn't settled in yet. Was reapplied about a week ago.

1.35v = a lot :P

8 x 425 I'm guessing? Try giving it 1.28v. Might do the trick.

you saying that to him.. or you saying I should try 1.28v???

did you see my load temps on my previous posts.. are those ok. I'm thinkin I might just go to 3.4 and leave it at that. I just don't like my idle going over 40.. I'm a weirdo I know. I have OCD. i don't like change. lol

If you're talking to me, well my VID on my Q9450 is 1.125V. Plus a beta BIOS on the Blitz formula, it's not easy to get lower voltages. It still thinks 1.5v is considered safe. I can get to 3.87Ghz at 1.435v after droop.

Is it under nice temps at 3.8? My core one is already peaking 39c with 1.28v (it's what CPU-Z says) and 3.44GHz. The other cores are roughly about 28-32.

All my sensors are fucked, well my first 2 don't move from 28. The other two swing from 24 - 30.

What's weird about all this is my overclocked Quad runs cooler than my P4 640 overclocked. Hahaha.

Those sensors must be fucked. But if 3.8Ghz gives you mid 20 idle then that fucking good.

BIOS says 36 upon warm boot at 3.87. I finally cracked it at 1.465v after droop (set it at 1.4875v). But it doesn't complete pi for some reason :(

So question.. How many different ways are there to Overclock a CPU..

I have the Q6700, and all I did was go into my BIOS in my 750i Mobo, and I changed the fsb speed to 1333, and then my voltage to 1.45v and unlinked the RAM.. and thats it.

That gets me to 3.33 GHz stable, at 3.2 no matter what I do with voltage it's unstable.. but 3.2 has the Temps I "WANT" is there anything I could try to get 3.2 to stay stable.. and is there other ways to oc as I see people saying stuff like 10x340 to get to 3.4 What are they doing different from me. I just wanna make sure I'm doing it right. The way I have it, it's ok for long term since temps are good right???

Have you tried 8x400?

This is what I run 24/7 on my Q6600, and it is stable at about 1.4V (can't remember exactly, can check it later today if I remember.

i just run 3.2 24/7 as well as i have found that on a quad it is plenty of speed for most apps (10x320 at 1.365v bios)

8 x 400 here on stock.

Makes my CPU seem a whole lot more energy efficient than nesquick's. Maybe you haven't tried lower volts or is that the absolute voltage it needs to be stable? 3.2GHz is more than enough power for anything really. I'm going to continue using socket 775 until Sandy Bridge I think. 32nm goodies :D
