Overclocking the new rig?

So heyhey guys, as some would know, i recently got my new rig *and got it working*.

Specs for those who didnt know are
Intel E8200
GA-EP31-DS3L
2GB (1GB x 2) DDR2 800 Trancend
ASUS 8800GS

I've got my E8200, originally clocked at 2.66 running at 3.0, fair'nuff for me. But howcome my RAM goes down to being rated at 667 even though the frequency is 450?

Also, how far have people been able to overclock their 8800GS' ?

I have, just unsure as to why the RAM gets clocked lower when you overclock the CPU.

Also the stuff about PCI-e bus and voltages.. T_T"

There are a number of reasons for that. It may be because your RAM has a certain speed, and when you overclock, the nearest FSB/DRAM ratio is making it clock less, to be able to keep as close as possible to the specified speed you bought it at.

Secondly, how do you know it's going down? What program are you using to see this?

If it is CPU Z then by 450MHz, it's actually saying 900MHz, because CPU Z takes the speed of the memory before the doubling of the data rate.

:-)

Get back to us

Edit, after a quick set of calculations, there is no way that your RAM could be running at 450MHz, physically impossible. So, I am going to assume that you are in fact, using CPU Z. To confirm this, I am going to guess that you have not manually set your RAM Multiplier, which means that it is automatically being set to 2.4B (it's one of the options).

What you need to do is manually change your RAM multiplier, which can be found in the same place that you changed your FSB, to 2.0A (or just 2.0) because at the moment it is running at auto.

Oooh, thanks much F_B, i've set it to 2.0, the ratio is 1:1 now in CPU Z.

Funny that though. Before when it was 450MHz, 180ish fps on css. When i changed the multiplier i go back to the old 200+ fps even though the frequency was lowered by a good 75MHz.. Why's that?

To me that sounds like an anomaly, because RAM Speed (or at least that difference) would have very little effect on your gaming performance, maybe 2% at most.

Possible you weren't at a different area the second time around? ;-)

LOLL maybe its something else .. ? Haha, i just remember when i first got this set up at stock, i was hitting 250ish frames on de_Dust2 and now they're at 150ish.

Also, what's the go on PCI-e ratings ? If mine's set at "Auto" ..?

And i just got my cpu upto 3.2ghz, 31-33degC .. cold night though ..

What 3DMark06 do you get with your 8800GS (I have one too but it's labeled 9600GSO in my tagline)?

580/700x2/1450

Mine is only "slightly" overclocked. You have the higher overclocked version.

Isnt it a rule to always LOCK the PCI-EX Freq @ 100Mhz because the FSB overlocking will push it higher..?

And having your ram go lower to 667mhz isnt a bad thing considering U'd want the headroom while Overclocking the FSB...

Hmm funny that, when i lock the PCI-e bus to 100, its unstable and wont get past the windows loading screen?

And Jeruselem, i got 9445 marks in 06, i left my 8800GS at stock 550/800 and had the cpu @ 3ghz

Nice, I only get 6372 ... due to the CPU bottleneck.
I reckon you get to 10K with GPU overclock.
