well here is a pic of the parts and with some luck i will be back in a few hours with a little more info and pics
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y83/dasa09/P1100002.jpg

Edit:

at stock v it reached 400fsb 3.2ghz
but to go higher it needs more cpu v so now testing with 1.3v (reporting 1.232)
load temp is now 39-41c

ok cpu set to 1.4v reporting 1.36v idle 1.328v load all other v are set at normal
with those settings it was able to run prime at 460fsb 3680mhz for a few min before i tried for 470fsb
at which point it was unable to complete prime and raseing vcore didnt help so i guess its starting to reach a fsb limit time to do some more tweaking

with 1.4v set the cpu is now reaching 41-46c under load

ok had to up the v a fair bit but now running prime at 470fsb
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y83/dasa09/oc1-1.jpg
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y83/dasa09/P1100012.jpg

and now 480fsb

500fsb 4ghz

That looks awesome man. The boxes make you so excited don't they?

Getting my Q9450 on Saturday and I'll be trying to take you on with my P35-DS3P :P

Seriously though, for only $205 that P45-DS3P looks like it will shit on the X38-DS4/DQ6 and a lot of yum cha Asus boards.

Try putting your E6600 in. Though it will be annoying for you because you have watercooling in your now old setup.

So the white flashing bar is the black screen with the flashing underscore in the right hand corner?

You can try reset your CMOS but I don't know if it will work.

im also worried since when i clamped down the cpu it went crunch a few times...

Edit changed the cpu and still have the same problem
i may try a different gpu but im thinking there is something up with the mb :(
as far as i can see all the pins look fine

I have no idea.

There is no reason to reject the 8800GT :( The P45 does have PCI-E 2.0 doesn't it? The 8800GT is a PCI-E 2.0 card. Yet My 3850 is also PCI-E 2.0 and it's in my DS3P (which is 1.0 I think) chugging along fine.

Have you considered the fact your PSU might be a weakling? I don't know what PSU you have.

But yeah it's mainly VIA chipset boards that reject PCIE 2.0 cards and not Intel boards. Maybe your 8800GT is borked or didn't get enough power.

well 8800gt is now dead just went poof and i smelt smoke
and i think i found out why it died and possibly why it was freezing
i bumped the vmod resistor leads on the 8800gt while swapping it and forgot to check it was still ok
they were joined together so the gpu was being fed full v
the smoke smell is coming from the power regs
now when i try to turn the pc on with it in the fans start to spin for half a sec then it shuts off

goodbye 8800gt that was stable at 850mhz :(

Aw damn man.

Dasa's 8800GT R.I.P

Look on the bright side, you can get an ATi 4850 and watch it cream the old scores of your 8800GT =D

That would also mean our systems would be nearly identical too. Just most of my things would be a generation... older.

Well at least try do some overclocking with the Q9450. I wanna see what you can pull off.

yer its rather sad i really wanted to see what score i could reach with that 8800gt i was expecting it to manage ~17k if the cpu clocks ok

x1900xtx and q9450 are in the pc now so time to install xp and see how she clocks

edit as for a new gpu i wont be going back to a 512m card and was tempted by the idea of 4870x2 anyway so we will see

Damn man that really sucks :-(

Well, look on the brightside, I still hold the Atomic record for single card nVidia score in 06.

Wait, what? :P

Just kidding man. Really sorry to hear :-( That was a really nice clocking card too, it will be surely missed. However just think of this as one of those times where it was a hard lesson learnt for a simple mistake :-(

Hey Dasa, how about 2 x 4850's to show off ATi's new powerhouse grunt and value?

You know with 3 PCI-E slots, does that mean you can Tri-Fire?

Or just wait for the 4870X2 and you pretty much have the best card in the world.

yer thats fairly much what i was thinking Fat_Bodybuilder
yes some cheap 4850s would be great fun

as for overclocking this cpu from the little reading i have done the auto settings may be very dangerus once i start winding up the fsb
so im going to have to do some reading on all the different v settings but there isnt a lot of info around for p45 yet

Is overclocking on a P45 that difference from a P35? All I do it up the FSB until it gets unstable and than I give some voltage. Oh and the recommended voltage is max 1.3625 I think. If auto is dangerous, do it manually =D

http://www.bit-tech.net/news/2008/05/12/will-you-overclock-intel-s-p45/1
If you want to buy and overclock on an Intel P45 board (or X48, X38 and P35 for that matter), Leach believes that you must learn how to use:

* GTL Reference Voltages
* CPU VTT and its relation to GTLs
* Clock Skews
* CPU PLL Voltages

from what iv read on forums the mb may set dangerously high levels at 400fsb and at higher fsb it may set levels that will make the cpu die very quickly
