Yay, can't wait to see the results. :)

I don't think my AMD x2 4400+ is going to cut it. :P

Don't think my P4 can cut it. Again this year they fail to allow people to enter via percentage increase.

dude, they will never do that, because it is not so much a measure of the overclockers capabilities

If you make it cutting edge, then you would presume that everyone is using the same gear

What about performance percentage increase and overclocked speed numbers averaged?

Your answer lies here;

Otherwise someone could get an old Celeron 400, you know the ones that used to completely kick arse back in the day, and potentially romp it over people with newer kit based on percentages.

God

We went over this last year in detail when we did the 2007 event but I'll reiterate the sentiment again as it hasn't changed...

The percentage idea doesn't work due to the huge number of complex differences not only between, say, Intel vs ATI, but also product/model segmentation within just one of the vendor's line-ups.

But, perhaps the most influential point is that Atomic MPC stands for Atomic Maximum Power Computing. As such not only do we report on and write about maximum power computing in all the manners that it appears, but there's a general concept that the large majority of our readers also ride the wave of technology.

It really is unfortunate that some individuals feel they're being left out, mistreated or otherwise hard done by. But believe us please when we say that we considered all options, hence why for example this year we have a split air and extreme cooling segmentation to assure that still the guys with air cooling have a chance.

It ultimately comes down to the old quip that you simply can't make everyone happy. So, we've done our best to meet the needs of the majority.

I hope this can clear things up for you all and I really look forward to watching the results pour in.

Even if you don't think you can hit the top spots, it's still a lot of fun to compete against others in the middle of the field and try to get that next step in efficiency for your overclock.

Good luck peeps ^___^

So for the Air cooling, what's a good starting point for entry? And if you live NZ, and get onto the top, is travel covered?

can we enter the air cooling bit and if we won get the prize but not go to the next stage?

It would be nice to see a post of the bios setting for the top performers, and would help newbie overclockers and overclockers in general get a better grip of the hurdles in their own machines. I read Josh's overclocking article on the QX9650 but I can't even get 3.6Ghz on 1.1v, I had to go to 1.3v. No doubt I'm doing something wrong and I know every overclocker should find their own answers but that won't be much comfort for some young kid who might ruin a component in the process.

I can almost certainly guarantee you that a LARGE number of your readers do not own QX9650 or better CPU's!!!

Heres an idea, pick 3 of the most commone high end CPU Types - QX9650, Q6600, E6850 (or whatever you decide?) and then have the highest overclocks for each cpu type???

Dont limit by air or water cooling, as i believe the setup you choose or design is one of the most integral part of overclocking, if you can make ur own kick arrse water cooling setup, or increase case airflow somehow then good on em.

just 2 cents from someone who went to the final last year.

Would it not be better for a cheap baseline cpu to be overclocked (such as the Intel Pentium Dual Core E2200)in a different category - I.E. An on the cheap category?

These chips are cheap enough for most people to buy one and enter.

"It ultimately comes down to the old quip that you simply can't make everyone happy. So, we've done our best to meet the needs of the majority."
According to http://www.steampowered.com/status/survey.html
a majority of PC users are still using single core with a frequency of 2.3 Ghz to 2.69 Ghz, sure you are going for the high end - but with only 4.36 % of users on quad core - the amount of the really high end cpu's owned by people would have to be lower.

Also - Again Super pi is being used, move onto multi core benchmarks dammit!
If you insist that people use uber high end hardware then at least it would be nice to actually utilize all the cores of such hardware.

Sorry, but in my eyes this competition is flawed, it fails to allow the greatest group of people who overclock to join (those who buy cheap hardware and overclock it in order to increase speed), It is understandable that people using LN2 and Dice will be using higher end hardware, but for the low end/air cooling comp I think the rules need to be rewritten.
