+1 Stickied.

With so many people buying C2D setups now I think this would be a big help for most ppl.

just bought a new PC:
Intel E6400 2.13GHz, 1066 MHz FSB
mobo gigabyte 965P-DS3; bios is F9 as new
1GB 667 DDR2

i followed these instructions to a tee, but to no avail. i exit bios and the computer fails to boot up. i have to force a reset and it undoes the clock speed changes. what steps should i take from here? downgrade to the F5 bios? i'm not sure if that will even work. this is my first try at overclocking so go easy on me.

cheers,
shaun

ok i tried this method with F5 bios and it works fine. i think i may need an additional cooling unit for it though at this rate. it idles at low to mid 50s (degrees), and under some pressure (not heaps) it goes up roughly 10 degrees. we'll see i suppose. seeing as some of you idle at low to mid 40s, it's not so encouraging at my end.

Just a quick Question guys. I have a Gigabyte S3 mobo.with a 6400 and 2 gig 667 kingston value ram. are the bios settings the same as the ds3 as you talk about and what actually is the difference between the boards?

Thanks

Nevermind I figured it out.

I am new to the overclocking game and have just built a new rig with a core2duo 6400, GA-965P-DS3P motherboard and 800MHz OCZ ram (2x1gig) but when I follow the tutorial from the first post the machine always reboots about 5 seconds after turning it on so i have to clear the CMOS to get it running again, the only differences between the setup in the tutorial and my rig is the GA-965P-DS3"P" motherboard (updated to latest F4 Bios) and the faster ram, can anyone please give me some pointers as i really would like to see what the chip can do with dvdrebuilder.

Thanks

Pushed the new E6300 straight up to 400X7 but she runs a tad hot (gonna retry my heatsink fitting before i clock her down).

With the DS3 or DS3P you just cant go wrong,I buggered the bios update and it fixed itself (when i booted her up and it said 'checksum error' i could have crapped outta diamond)!!

Was wondering what changes to that guide i should do? im new to this and as the guide states he's using 667mhz ram im not too sure what settings to use?

I'm running the DS3, E6400, and 667 RAM, but when I follow this guide, my idle temps go from 38-40 to 53-55. Is this kind of spike normal for a minor overclock? I tried the FSB at both 333 and 367, both give the same results.

EDIT: I also get the same spike when raising the FSB to just 285...

EDIT2: Well I seem to have figured it out. If you leave the Vcore voltage control on auto, it will scale up as you increase FSB unnecessarily. I dropped mine down to 1.29 and is stable so far at 310 FSB and is down to 40-41 degrees idle and 48-50 under load. I have read reports that the e6400 is stable under voltages as low as 1.18 though. I'll keep testing and report it here. So it seems you need to take vcore control off auto...

@sejjiin ahh, voltage stuff...not something i wanna really play with but i would love to drop a few more degrees off my cpu, the difference between monitoring programs bothers me a bit (moving off topic here i know) speedfan shows an idle in the low 40s but everest shows an idle in the mid 20s

May as well add mine to this:

E6400 @ 400*7
DS3 - F4 BIOS
G.Skill 2GBHK 800Mhz 4-4-3-9 2.1v

Sitting in the high 40's under load. Gonna try for 400*8 and see what happens.

My setup is close to identical but I have 2 gigs of 800mkz DDR2 ram. Are the OC settings different for 800mkz memory? I would like to try it but dont want to make my memory slower than 800mkz thats for sure!

Look at my settings videospace that ram I am using is 800Mhz stock.

Try the 400*7 to keep your RAM at 1:1 and work up from there. Depending on your RAM it most likely won't like 4-4-3-9 start off with 4-4-4-12 if not 5-5-5-15.

My RAM is designed to run at 4-4-3-5 @ 800Mhz 2.0-2.1v stock. The minimum the DS3 won't let me go to 4-4-3-5 hence the 4-4-3-9.
