Samsung 6 series 40" vs Sony Bravia 40" w/ iDTV

Hello all,

My parents REALLY want a new HDTV. They've eyed up the two following ones, don't gasp too hard at the ridiculous NZ prices.

http://www.noelleeming.co.nz/tvs-dvds/televisions/lcd-tvs/30-lcd-tv/samsung-la40a650-40-full-hd-l
http://www.sony.co.nz/bravia/product/all-tv-by-size/current-range/KDL40W4000.jsp

Now, any other suggestions? They've got a budget of around $3000NZD, but are happy to stretch a tad if needed. We've got a PS3 and 5.1 surround sound system, but it's a Logitech X-530 so it's pissy.

We've eyed up the Sony one because it's got Freeview HD decoder built-in, that's a NZ Govt thing, so it's a great bonus. However, other than that, I think the Samsungs have a better panel but I've never actually owned or seen either compared.
Cheers,
c0nc0n

Howdy,

Have you gone to a shop and looked at them side by side?
it will help with the decision making a fair bit :)

Both a pretty decent from what I gather and im not 100% on this but I think they use the same pannels? other components in the build a different but panels are the same?

anyone able to confirm / deny?

Well, it's difficult to do that because the Samsung is in one shop, the Sony Bravia is in the Sony Style store, so it's very hard to get a comparison.

Have you checked out the warranties on each? IIRC the larger Samsungs come with 5 year warranty, whilst Sonys come with 3.

Pity you can't see them side-by-side - that's the best way. I'm a massive Samsung fanboy, so of course I'd go with Samsung. I like the look of their TVs, from the fluidity and colour to the glossy black bezel/stand and remote control.

Plenty of Sony fanboys out there as well though. *shrug* my folks LOVE their Samsung 40"

AFAIK Samsungs are 3 year warranties, the Bravias are 12 months.

One thing to consider on the Samsung, particularly that one, is a lot of people complain of the panel being overly shiny or reflective (LCDs really shouldn't have that issue).

Realistically both TVs are great and it will come down to personal preference, however the shininess of the Sammy may be a negative to some. Double check the warranties as well, if the Sony is a 1 year standard, find out about extending it.

/me raises hand. I've had never had anything but Sony TV's (anyone want an 8 year old 80cm Trinitron 4:3 tv? :p).

I just replaced my 76cm Sony HD KVDA32M36 with a 52" Bravia X, and it's completely awesome. Integrates well with my Sony 7.1 AV reciever, Sony Bluray player, Sony HD-STB, Sony Speakers, Sony SD DVD player, Sony VCR, Sony 200 disc CD player. You get the idea (too much Sony)...

Hello, thanks all.

We got the Sony Bravia 40" V series, they threw in an extra 2 years warranty for free and free HDMI cables + it has iDTV built in so we're going to pick up the UHF antenna later this week. Pretty good I have to say :)
