LED Monitors?

I've noticed LED monitors with some pretty impressive specs. Does anyone actually own one or has anyone researched them well and seen them in person? Your thoughts would be appreciated.

I have wondered about this but thought it wouldn't be possible. Maybe the colour range or whatever isn't great?

I'm using a LED display in my macbook pro. It's a nice display, bright and accurate. But if your going to be using it for print work it is critical that you have it calibrated for your printer.

cheers

Thanks for the responses homies, I've decided if they make a 26"+ plus LED I'm going to check it out in July, if not I'm going to get the next best thing.

Viewsonic has a 22" out for around $600, mhm not cheap but the tech at viewsonic reckons they look better than the top of the line VP series which is around $520 for the VP 22". Toms hardware have a news article on LED monitors and my friend at JB who loves this stuff (updates to a top plasma every year) says LED are the future. I am going to check one out as soon I know one is on display somewhere.

Yet to see one, but I imagine black is black and viewing angle doesn't matter... dunno about response times; I guess LEDs should be pretty quick.

Which would shit all over the LCD drawbacks, leaving discrete pixels as the only drawback left for flat panels vs CRTs... except for lifetime, prolly.

I had no idea these babies were out yet.

In case anyone is confused. These monitors just replace the CCF backlight with LEDs. They are still LCDs, just with a new backlight technology.

Kimmo, isn't the response time determined by the LCD, not the LEDs?

Yeah, I was initially confused about that but I realised the reality before you mentioned it but it was probably worth mentioning.

Samsung will be releasing the XL30 in Australia shortly complete with color calibration hardware etc. I had a look on Newegg and it's almost 5K, bargain NOT!

i've been very VERY tempted to upgrade my current monitors.

20" & 19" viewsonic LCD's but i think i will hold out till more info and stuff comes out on LED LCD's. see how it turns out.

if not that good that at least it'll probably make old LCD's cheaper!!

LED as in replacing the cathode tube with a line of LEDs or a matrix of LED giving each pixel its own source?

The former I would think would be quite easy to implement. The latter harder, but better?

What I can't understand is why this hasn't made it to mainstream screens yet and also why it carries such a high price premium.

Considering the price of LED's and the reduced cooling requirements. I mean I can buy and LED torch for like a dollar...

Who knows perhaps there is something I'm missing here

Nah you know how it is, if they didn't slug as with new technology at max price the market wouldn't move.
