Reading all of the newegg reviews from the link that Josho posted above, it looks like the brightness issues were fixed before going on sale to the public as none of them mention that problem.

Although one problem they have said is that if you use the HDMI input (which you will have to if you are using DVI from you PC - the monitor doesn't have a DVI input but uses a DVI to HDMI cable), it doesn't go into sleep mode and will stay a bright blue colour.

When using the HDMI interface, the monitor will not go into a sleep mode. It remains in a high power state with a blue color which will significantly shorten the monitor's life because the projecting light is always on. I called ViewSonic and they acknowledged this was a design flaw and couldn't give me fix date.

But really, how hard is it to just turn the monitor off anyway?

Also from the newegg site the following summary of user reviews sums it up well for me:

Excellent 26 reviews 63%
Good 6 reviews 15%
Average 4 reviews 10%
Poor 3 reviews 7%
Very poor 2 reviews 5%

If Umart or someone up here in Brisbane had them I'd get one tomorrow. :p

Just as an update for anyone looking at this monitor from a review at http://www.xyzcomputing.com/index.php?option=content&task=view&id=1130&Itemid=0&l it seems that Viewsonic has fixed the problem of it not going into standby mode. See the last paragraph of page four.

I also emailed Umart about stocking them in general but said they could get me one in so they could probably do it for others.

I haven't got one yet as I did my tax and it looks like I'm going to have to pay them so I want to get an amount back from the tax office (opposed to relying on the e-tax figure) before buying it.

And that's pretty sad.

I never thought I would have to pay the man to get wood.

Hehe, ditto :P

I really can't say enough about this giant of a monitor for this price. Absolutely amazing.

Hello everyone ... this is my first post :) so welcome me (thank you in advance)

I was about to go for the 30" SAMSUNG 305T (almost $1200) but i couldn't find it at any local dealer .. so add to it (about $270) for shipping/delivery and it will settle over $1500. A friend of mine recommended this baby (which i found locally at $720. Half the price and a couple of inches less is still great.

Now it all depends on climbing's experience with it. But i don't see him/her logged on for a long time now. It's either:
- in love with the monitor, or
- still fighting to get the money back :P

30" for $1200 and 28" for $720? Do you live in the states?

Yes, I did buy one of these monitors.

I'm happy with it - and the price was right (under $900.00).

Build date: 2007-06-18

I use it as a TV and for my xbox 1.

At this stage, I haven't used it as a monitor for a pc as i use a laptop computer - I guess I've been too busy and lazy to plug it in and try it.

I will do this probably on the weekend (if I find the time).

Summary thus far:
[ ] Its big
[ ] It fits in well enough in the lounge room
[ ] It offers full HD capability
[ ] No in-built TV tuner but thats not a problem - I bought a HD tv tuner from WOW sight n sound for around $60.00. I use the HDMI input for the tv signal and the component input for the xbox.
[ ] It has HDMI, DSUB, Component, and Svideo inputs - more than enough for my needs
[ ] No dead pixels
[ ] DVD movies, xbox games, and tv all look good to me.
[ ] I'm very happy with this monitor - for the price, its hard to beat. I've seen bigger LCD TV's at Harvey Norman with less resolution at much higher prices...

Just need to hope that my Dell xps M1710 laptop with GeForce Go 7900 GS graphics card will drive the monitor... My laptop screen is currently running at 1920 x 1200.

I guess I'll find out soon enough!

I'm not sure if you are aware of this, but there is a massive difference in resolution between those two monitors.

The 28" has a resolution of 1920x1200, while the 30" has a resolution of 2560x1600. There might only be a couple of inches difference, but the 30" has almost double the resolution (2.3MP vs 4.1MP), so it is with very good reason that there is a large price difference.

Yeh, actually I think he does. I've seen the 28" for $850 about a month ago, so I figured it was possible that the price had come down, but yeh, the 30" Samsung still retails here for about $1850.

First hiccup with this monitor *bites nails*

Been great for the last couple of months, but all of a sudden yesterday the HDMI input stopped registering. Am currently using an RGB/VGA15 cable with a DVI adapter to connect to my PC. The HDMI-->DVI cable and setting the monitor to HDMI just gives the standard blank blue screen you get when the computer is off.

Troubling.

Have called Viewsonic support and apparently I need to talk to a service manager who'll call me back soon.

*EDIT* They're mailing me out another HDMI-->DVI cable. Hopefully that'll do the trick, otherwise it's repair/replace time.

Have there been any other cases of that happening?

Not that it would really matter to me, I haven't come across a device that uses HDMI before...

The monitor comes with a DVI->HDMI cable - it's the only way to hook up a computer to it using the DVI port of your graphics card natively. So yeah, it's kind of important.

The VGA input still gives a very nice image though - I've got a second computer hooked up to mine, and can't really tell the difference between the HDMI and VGA inputs.

Keeping on topic, does anyone know where in Melbourne this moniter might be in stock currently? I gave a bit of a ring around to the usual suspects and no one had it in stock. The general consensus was that stock did not have an ETA and some stores have even gone so far as to remove it from their product lists.

No one seems to have many of them. I saw one set up in a local computer shop recently, but it is gone now. Looks amazing in the flesh. No idea how much they wanted for it though, probably a ridiculous price...

I'm thinking of picking up one over the weekend. MSY has them in stock @ $750.

Bit of an update with the HDMI/DVI problem I mentioned earlier. I was quite lazy and after testing with the replacement cable (which didn't help) I left it for a few weeks before doing anything about it.

On reporting the failed cable test to Viewsonic two days ago I've since had a replacement dropped off and the old one picked up. Nice fast turnaround. New monitor was obviously a refurbished, but it's clean and works well, and I think doesn't suffer as badly from darker-top-of-the-screen as the old one. Handy.
