bnew thinks:

Despite everything else, I can't get over the look of the ViewSonic LCDs. Yuk.

About the Atomic article ViewSonic VX2835wm

http://www.atomicmpc.com.au/article.asp?SCID=&CIID=84470

The amazing evolution of bigger cheaper better LCDs breaks another barrier.

What do you think?

I think they look quite nice personally - the photos don't really do them justice.

As for everything else, very promising indeed.

Cheaper and bigger than the Dell?!?! Rather cool. Personally i think the speakers are a waste of time and resources.

I am tempted too Mills...

However, the seemingly incredible price drop may be too good to be true.

Life experience tells me that when something sounds too good to be true - it is.

I have a feeling that the retailers want to off-load their current stock of vx2835wm 28 inch monitors as quick as possible. 'Throw out a line and reel them in'...

Might have something to do with the current stock having bugs (as per July Atomic mag article).

By 'bugs', I mean:
[ ] the sound issue
[ ] the sharpness issue

If I was a retailer and i knew there were bugs such as the above in my current stock - and then a widely read atomic magazine article basically reviews the monitor in a way that would deter hardcore geeks - I would want to 'get rid of' that stock quickly. Enter the price drop...

I am definitely deterred from buying this monitor until the 'bugs' are ironed out. What I really need to know is when the firmware upgrade is forthcoming and how will we know which monitors are 'fixed' and which aren't.

I an teetering between a 24 inch BenQ monitor and the Viewsonic 28 inch monitor... at this stage, its the benQ until I cant get hard data and facts on the firmware fix of the viewsonic.

Hmmm

I dont think the sound issue is really gonna be circumventable with firmware. Its more the design of the thing, its taken the television methodology of matching sound input to video inputs, good if you wanna hook up consoles and switch between them. Maybe firmware can allow playing sound with no video signal, but why!? If you can afford a 28'monitor go get yourself some half decent speakers.

Personally I dislike big viewsonics for their tendency to include speakers. The increase screensize for something i really dont need, and definitely dont appeal to the hardcore geek market as climbing puts it. In fact the viewsonics i've seen all belong to none geek friends who just picked it up for the size/prize ratio on them.

Price drops will be inevitable once other low end manufacturers get in the 24"+ movement, but unlikely until them do. Hopefully pull it down enough so i can upgrade to two of them 18 months down the line in my upgrade cycle :)

crud, now i'm tempted to sell my 22" and just upgrade to two of these. But still i hate the speakers look. Would be so much better if it had a full slim bezel instead.

To the person who wrote the article. What brightness and contrast setting are using or recommend. I just purchased and its great although mine keeps its sharpness setting even when I turn it off. I guess they either corrected the problem or you got a defective one.

Heh halflife, this is great news!

Can you do us all a big favour and tell us the model number, batch and/or serial number and any other info you see on the panel.

What you say directly contradicts the Craig Simms article in July Atomic.

Wonder what he thinks about your post here? Hope he's reading this and might be kind enough to comment??

Also, halflife - have you experienced the same sound problem as reported by Mr Simms?

Look forward to more info...

I am now at work will put the model # when i get home. As far as the speaker, I connected my monitor via hdmi and got sound from the sound jack when plugged into my Audilogy 2. Now there are two sound jack one is a headphone jack and the other one is to connect to your soundcard. Although, sound worked I would not recommend as the quality of the speakers just dont compare to good speakers. I have klipch spekers so I just tried the speakers to see if they would work.

Thanks halflife, any info you provide will be most appreciated.

By the way, which store did you purchase from?

I was going to buy the BenQ 24 inch lcd but now I think its the viewsonic... price seems to good to be true for a 28 inch panel.

I just want to chime in and say my VX2835wm neither has the sharpness bug nor the sound bug.
I'm using the hdmi input and the 3.5mm sound jack. Like every one says, the speakers are joke anyway and you are better off matching this beauty with some 5.1 speakers.

The panel is perfect with 0 dead/stuck pixels. Just wish it had height adjustable stands. It does tilt.

Perhaps the reviewer got a lemon or a sample with older firmware.

Build Date: 2007-05-21
Serial: QFG072100XXX
Firmware: ?????

I will still thank the editor it was his review that prompted me to buy this monitor in the first place as it was the first review anywhere. If you want some detailed reviews by buyers go to newegg.com they have 9 reviews all came after the review here.

Aparently it doesn't have the blue screen standby bug using vga connections.

Would be perfect for a 360 owner running through vga then.

as long as you dont plan to use the crummy speakers on it.

Hmm i'm actually considering this monitor as a viable option to replace my 19 widescreen. but then again I'd have to buy a new desk to fit it in :P

I just took the plunge and made a purchase from www.centrecom.com.au in Vic @ $889.00 (GST inclusive). It was a toss up between this and the BenQ 24 inch monitor (which also has HDMI input).

I gave instructions that the build date was not to be before 2007-05-21 as per "whitetiger" post above. Purchase is conditional upon this request being carried out.

I will post back here to inform others of the build date on my monitor and how it performs re the so called bugs as reported by Craig Simms in July Atomic.

Only thing to do now is wait for it to arrive and then enjoy some serious screen real estate in HD. My intention is to use it for DVD's, Xbox games. I think I might also splurge and buy a set top box for SD & HD TV and plug it into the viewsonic monitor...

Nice to hear that the problems have been fixed -- Atomic often gets early product samples and sometimes things aren't as up to scratch as it would hope. It's an excellent monitor and with those factors overcome, short of anyone having aesthetic issues it's a very attractive proposition.

Sorry halflife, I'm afraid I can't recall the brightness and contrast settings used -- it was a month ago that I saw the monitor and I've seen many products and switched jobs since :)
