What quality do you rip your CDs at?

I always used to do 128kbit Mp3 because I couldn't hear the difference, but recently I did a 256kbit mp3 and the difference is quite substantial. From now on, that's what I'ma be doing that at!

I have yet to try Lossless, anyone fancy that? What's the average size of a song when using that?

What do you normally do your rips at and what format?

Cheers

128kbit WMA, since I don't have great speakers anyway and I don't uber-large file to cart around.

64kbit MP4 for my Nokia 6131 phone since it can only handle 2GB SD cards.

I personally use 256kbps VBR (with my max at 320kbps obviously)

its 256kbps about 80% of the time, and it jumps to 320kbps when the music gets 'complicated'.

Now, since everyone is yelling at me "OH GOD HOW CAN YOU DO IT!" Im thinking of ripping the rest of my CDs in FLAC then converting from FLAC to MP3 when im done. (saves me actually ripping twice).

Then again, i'll just rip twice and finish my MP3 collection first.

FLAC for storage, comes to about 300Meg an album, a real album not a 45 minute fluff album! :)

for my PSP I use AAC at -q 0.66 with neroAacEnc, which I think is 250Kbps variable.

edit: about 6 megabytes per minute for my FLAC files.

320kbps CBR Lame ripped with Cdex.

WMP doesn't support FLAC's fully, but if it did I'd prolly rip in FLAC.

Why? I've tried others (Mediamonkey, Foobar200 [which I use when gaming], iTunes and winamp) and I still like WMP11 the best.

MP3 @ 192k VBR.

Reasonable mix of size, quality and compatability.

MP3 @ VBR 4 w/ Lame 1.32 under Audiograbber. So yeah, I have no idea what that all translates to, just that thank goodness my hearing isn't fussy :)~

Oh yeah, I also made an image of the CD too, and subsequently back it up. Home & contents insurance is one thing, MP3 is another, but ain't nothing quite like the almost genuine thing.

FLAC's lossless though right?

ie my understanding is that .wav is as good as it gets but isnt compressed, whilst FLAC is the same yet compressed about 50%. Is that accurate?

Yeah SavageD, that's accurate.

If we were really anal about it, the disc would never be ripped at all, and only played on your high end ($5k+) CD player, with HiFi amp ($10k+) and insaneo ($20k+) speakers, through stranded gold speaker and connecting wire.

as always with audio, it's a tradeoff between how conveniently, how accurately and how expensively you're prepared to listen to music :)
