Studio Monitoring Speakers

Hi all,

i went to a friend's place the other night and he got a nice set of speakers for mixing/dj-ing whatever its. later, i learnt that they are Studio monitor speakers. M-Audio BX8a.

From my understanding, Studio monitoring speakers are designed for audio production, mixing, recording etc. But is it alright to use them just to listen to music? replacing something like logitech 2.1 speakers..

Initially, i was looking for a set of Audioengine A5 speakers (recommended by datafast :P). but at $500, i could almost get something like KRK RP-5 or M-audio BX5a.

I'm going to use the speakers on my mac, playing cd, flac or mp3 files. so should i be bothered with studio speakers or A5 will do the job just fine?

Or maybe Hi Fi speakers?

cheers

I use KRK RP-6s for listening to music and they do a great job, the main difference you will find is they obviously have a flatter response which can be good or bad depending how you like your sound and also won't fill the room with sound like your typical speakers will. Which isn't an issue if you use them exclusively while you are at your PC. The other thing you need to consider besides the cost of the speakers though is what soundcard/interface you are going to plug them into. Studio Monitors tend to use TRS or XLR leads to connect.

Yes. Studio monitors are made to sound 'true', rather than 'good'.
Although I think they sound true AND good a lot of the time, sometimes I just don't like certain ones.

Best to go somewhere and try out a bunch by playing a Track you know really well through them all until you find a set that you can live with.

Yes, you can replace computer speakers with them. Just keep in mind though, a lot of the decent monitors don't do the minijack thing and have seperate 1/4 inch jacks or XLR inputs for each speaker.

I listen to normal music through my Event TR8s and I'm incredibly impressed.

-80 has great advise right there, listen to the ones on your short list in person and then decide, but take a CD of something you are familiar with and also make sure it is a very good recording.

Also judging by your post you really do need to listen to them, including the A5's ;)

Thanks for the reply =)

my iMac only has mini jack, i believe lower end monitor speakers have XLR and 2RCA interface. I can use a 2RCA - mini stereo jack to my computer.

One thing i like is it's powered. no need for an amp like Hi Fi speakers.

Also, does it matter what music you listen to?

yea, being an audio noob, i do need to listen to them..might have to visit some audio store..Anyone know where can i test the A5? i could only find online.

Where do you live?

There is a list of Australian resellers of the A5's here http://www.audioengineusa.com/resellers.htm#Australia

Is probably more but that may at least get you an audition.

If you are saving space, powered monitors are the way to go.
Can get expensive though.

The A5's are powered, and I would be surprised if anything in the studio monitor class at less than $500 would touch them for Hi-fi playback.

Just a general statement of my opinion to all, though I am only going on what other seem to think about the A5's ;)

Having not tried them, I'm intrigued.
I was going to build some little speakers for the kitchen and bathroom........

btw, A5 is like US$330... :(

From what i read so far, A5 is more than an ipod speakers. =) i'm not sure if it's compared to studio monitors tho

Studio monitors are more for production work rather than enjoyable listening, not saying all monitor suck in this area, but the A5's look more suited to the listening experience :)

Audition the A5's and some monitors in the same price bracket and tell use your thoughts please :)

Yeah side by side is out of the question, and I hope the Apple store has better than an ipod hooked up to the A5's, or is willing to hook something up, maybe an mac with a good sound card in it :(

As -80 said It's a starting point.

You can improve the sound of your source by putting a DAC between the computer and the speakers/amp

This is by no means high end but is a cheap one that is said to be good value, uses a Burr Brown DAC I believe

thanks -80 datafast..

i always think that soundcard is a waste of money ;| probably because i always use cheap speaker and couldn't tell the difference between onboard and something like creative's soundblaster.

care to explain how soundcard can improve sound quality?

Thanks again guys =P
