New Speakers! But Optical doesn't work :(

Hi all, I have recently bought the Z5500 speakers. They're connected to my PC by RCA (green/black/orange) and work great.

I have just bought a 'toslink->toslink digital optical lead' cable and plugged it in the Optical Audio Out of the TV and in the Optical slot of the Z5500 control panel.. but when I change the Input to Optical it says "No Digital Data".

Some images..
Z5500 Backpanel: http://i37.tinypic.com/wjvpxy.jpg
TV Backpanel: http://i36.tinypic.com/209k6mg.jpg

I have tried watching digital tv, normal tv, unplugging the RCA cables, turning everything off and on again, turning my X360 on (goes into tv) but nothing makes it detect the optical cable.

I can't find any settings in the TV to change output. Contacted Samsung FAQ and they said it shouldn't need to be changed on the TV at all to output through the optical cable.

I bought a coax cable but then realised the TV doesn't output coax... >_<

I just noticed that one of my Xbox360 cables has an optical port on the back of it, this cable here:

http://www.chadledford.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/09/avcables.jpg

I plugged my optical cable directly from the cable pictured above into my Z5500 optical port and it still had 'no digital data' when streaming a video..

It should be working.. right? Either just TV -> Z5500, or X360 Cable -> Speakers.. to me it sounds like it's either the cable or speakers at fault.. IF plugging it into the 360 cable should output sound.. otherwise it could be the cable, speakers OR TV's fault............

This is infuriating, any help would be great please :)

Hey turtle.

Couple of things to try -

*the optical cable is what it`s name suggests - fibre optic. When it is plugged into your source TV/Xbox, does it glow red at the end?

*Is your Samsung receiving HDTV? If so, tune to the Channel 10 HD test channel (55). It will give you Dolby Digital audio on a consistent basis. Any luck?

* Grab a DVD player and try both coaxial then optical with a DVD that you know has a Digital Soundtrack. You will need to navigate the DVD player`s Menu to setup your Audio to output over Digital. ( Make sure your 5500`s aren`t flat-out whilst doing this!).

I believe your Speakers are fine, your Cables are fine, it`s just having a Digital Source that is stopping the Show.

Hi there, thanks for the reply!

No, there's no light coming out of the cable when plugged into the TV or Xbox.

It can't find test channel 55 but I tried 10HD and 7HDTV channels and no glow or sound, still 'no digital data'.

I put in a Batman Begins DVD into the Xbox that has 'Dolby Digital' on the back, played it and set the audio to '1 English Dolby Digital', no sound, glow and still 'no digital data' on both TV -> Z5500 and Xbox Cable -> Z5500's.

It's times like these I wish my Xbox had HDMI >_<

Question:
Are you plugging the optical cable into optical IN on the TV?
Try plugging the optical cable from your xbox to your Z5500's and turning the optical out setting on the xbox on (assuming it can do that?) because it sounds like you're plugging stuff in in the wrong places =P~

If there's no light, then it's not working.

Make sure that optical out isn't disabled in the TV.

I can't see any option in the tv to turn it on and samsung support said it should be on by default if a cable is in.

Does this mean even if it's not plugged into anything? ie cable is in Optical Audio Out from the TV but not plugged into anything on the other end - should it still light up?

If so.. it's either a dodgy cable or the TV is somehow broked. /sigh

Beg, borrow or steal a DVD player with optical/coax output and find out.

Does your PC have optical?

Alright i'll ask around. So I will need 2 optical cables? One going from DVD Player to TV and one going from TV Optical Audio Out to Z5500s?

Nope.

Optical from DVD to Z5500`s for Digital Audio.

Composite/component to Samsung for video playback.

If Optical doesn`t work, use your Coax from DVD to Z5500`s.

As your 5500`s are new, you need to make sure that their Digital Connection isn`t borked. It may be. I wouldn`t daisy-chain the Samsung into the loop whilst trouble-shooting, as it isn`t "known good" as yet.

Have Fun.

Have you tried the cable on the 360 yet. You will need to head into the sound settings menu to turn it on. That way you can at least see if the cable works.

Just make sure you don't look straight on to the cable, those red lights are bad for you!!

As for the Samsung, that option should be on from the factory as they have stated. Take the cable out of it and see if it has a red light on.

As for how many cables you need, the Samsung only has optical out. TV's very rarely have any digital inputs as they are only a 2 speaker device.

And as for the Ten Test Channel, don't bother looking for it, we don't have it going here in Perth. I think thats an east coast thing.

If your still having problems, post the model of the Samsung.

Luck has it the family DVD Player has optical out!

I plugged it all in, optical cable going directly to Z5500's but no sound came out, but there was no light either.

Looking at all possible DVD and DVD Player audio menus there's no way to turn optical on so it should be automatic.

The coaxial cable I bought (that says audio/visual on it) is too big it doesn't fit!!

This leads me to believe the cable is broken. I'll grab one on monday and play around - hope it's as easy as that!

The tv is the Samsung 32inch r81 - LA32R81-BD if interested.

Not having much luck, eh turtle?

Re the coax cable: You can use any RCA lead you have instead of the store bought one. They generally just have more shielding to justify the 300% mark up.

I have to ask - you did remove the dust caps from each end of the optical cable, didn`t you? What`s that? Ahhh, just checking now? Good idea!

Every single DVD player I have seen over the years does not have SPDIF (Sony Phillips Digital Interface) turned on by default. It can be called numerous things in the Setup Menu, might be time to drag out a manual or two.

If you stick you finger over the Optical Output on the TV, does it glow red?

MSGT Bilko: Yes, there's a little flap but if I push that in there is definitely red light coming out - I assume that means it's working and the TV isn't broken - phew!!

I also just had a look at the DVD player (RTFM worked!) and set the digital output to On and still no light came out, it's definitely looking like the cable is borked to me.

If no light goes through the cable, then it is broken :)

Should be ~$20 to replace it, don't spend extra on the "premium" cables, since the signal is digital.

The audio isn't any better (as opposed to cable quality with analogue) but if you spend more you do get a better quality cable =P~
That's all you're getting though.
