im a bit confused as i don't know which sound card i should go for,i really don't need a 7.1,so 5.1 should be sufficient.
i mainly listen to music and game fairly heavily using a pair of senheiser usb phones, there only seems to be creative stuff out there atm,my budget is around the $150 mark, was thinking of these,

I wouldn't bother with the second two, and I would maybe favor a Audigy2 over the X-Fi for compatability reasons.

If posable I would avoid Creative all together.

Maybe this http://pcmaniacs.com.au/auzentech-xplosion-cinema-soundcard-p-4021.html

It's not Creative :D

It will take over the processing so lighten the load a little, yes.

I would definately get the Auzentech before any of those cards :)

Audigy 2 is good.
It will only give you one or two percent less CPU load but it's better than nothing.

This one.
EAX, and nice sound too.
Can't beat it.

Dave, his budget is $150, so that's pretty much $100 extra for EAX as the sound difference apart from that would not be a biggy.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

Oh yeah, touche' didn't notice the budget =P~
If you can't afford that, or don't game much then pick the one datafast suggested.
EAX is used in games to provide more authentic sounds. It's only found on creative cards (which are shit, don't buy an X-fi) and on the Prelude.
It's pretty much the best sound card in the average PC user range, but as I said, datafasts suggestion fits your budget better and isn't much worse at all.

If you plan on continuing to use your USB headphones, keep in mind that they are a "sound card" themselves and any soundcards you install into the system will have no impact on them.

As others have stated, a sound card will have no effect on a USB headset, so if you're wanting better sound you'll need a sound card and a new set of headphones. This gets a bit difficult on your budget of $150.

If you can't spend any more money, I'd say pick up an old Audigy Value soundcard for around $45, then spend the rest on a new set of headphones. The Audigy lacks some of the fancy new EAX stuff of the X-Fi series, but its still a good quality card and will give you enough change to buy a half decent set of 'phones.

Looking at that picture in the link to your headset the sound card part is detachable, if you unplug the standard headphone jacks from the USB part you should be able to plug it into a regular sound card.

That changes things considerably (especially if you're happy with that headset). An X-Fi card is probably recommended for gaming because of EAX. The Auzen Prelude's about as good as X-Fi cards come (That's what I'm running), but its out of your price range.

You could possibly also look at something from the Asus Xonar range, if you're running Windows Vista they've got some fancy driver set similar to Creative's Alchemy that will allow you to run EAX effects in software I believe.

Last time I looked at the Barracuda it used more CPU cycles than the competition, but these days with quad core I really don't think it is a big issue.

Apparently it works well in game with the "Barracuda" gaming headphones, and it uses the C-Media Oxygen HD CMI8788 chipset as seen on a number of cards.
