Headphones- a choice of three

Please help me narrow down my choice (pure subjectivity is allowed)

I have broken my preferences down to the three in the poll. They all have plus and minuses; life is about compromise, yeah?

My intended use will be my iPod and my PC. So, reasonably portable, closed, comfortable and NO AMPs required, please :)

Thanks
Stu

PS I hope this poll thingy works- I'm a virgin pollster!

PPS As they say in the job ads- Experience preferred, but will train the right person :)

Links in your OP would help.

I prefer open back myself but they can annoy people around you and they are no good in a studio if the mikes are too close.

Nice phones, to be sure :)

However, they require an AMP (well, to get the best out of them) AND they are open...

So, they fail two of my main criteria, for this particular exercise

OK, HD 212Pro from sennheisser.

I have a set, only about $120 and are brilliant.

I use 595s but seriously you should just go to a store and give all of them a listen.

Pretty pictues on the internets can't tell us jack about how they sound.

BTW have you considered canalphones?

To the store/s it is! (Just like to narrow the field a bit before I get there) :)

I HAVE thought of canalphones, but I actually like/prefer the feeling of over-the-head phones

Cheers

BAM! Thankyou, man!

In just the last couple of hours I've been leaning VERY heavily in THAT direction! :)

Now, all I have to do is get out from behind my monitor and drag my lazy arse down the road to test 'em!

OK, I'm sorry for changing my mind all the time :(

Just wanted to let you know I have switched back to the Audio Technicas at this stage...but I won't be able to get to the shop to try them for a couple of days.

Came to this decision after trying the Sennheisers at JB- the HD 212 Pros have a strong hold on 2nd place at the moment (although I don't much like the wire attaching on both sides), but the HD215s are back to third...a way behind the leaders. Mainly because they are freakin HUGE...and not really my style at that size range...

Now, I know that the Audio Technicas are also huge, but yet to throw them on my head yet. But I know I like them more, from an aesthetic point of view, if I need to go large (which I pretty much have to to get what I want out of these).

So, portability has lessened as a priority

Anyway, after that rant, check out this link:

http://www.djwarehouse.com.au/cat/index.cgi/shopfront/view_product_details?category_id=7885&p

Yes, that is $165 for the Audio Technica!

Their prices are pretty good all round, though, so lose yourself, especially if you are in Sydney :D

PS No more posts until I get a pair of SOMETHING :)

this article came up recently, mainly for PC gaming i think:

http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,2845,2325839,00.asp

i personally have the steelsound 5H v2 set, not great, but good enough for my lowly needs and i like the fact the mic retracts into the headset :)

PC gaming will be what I use the phones least for. Mostly ipod stuff on public transport, listening to music loud at home...

But thanks for the input. I've heard lots of good things about those cans :)

I've got the HD215s, picked up a pair in Singapore for $90 AUD! they do indeed go alright, I would rate them much better than my DT234PRO's.

Yeah, am sure the HD215s are pretty sweet sounding...they're still in the mix

As for the Audio Technicas- DAMMIT!!! I had a place in Sydney where I thought I could try them out, but they won't have stock for a couple of weeks!!!

Anyone know of stores in Sydney that stock them???

I guess I can wait :(

I've got the beyer dt250's and while they are awesome for mixing music, they are not what you'd want.

I don't care what everyone else says, they are pissweak if you don't have an amp. I've tried them in my usb walkman and direct out from my x-fi and they aren't anywhere near loud enough. I have to plug them into my z5500 control box to amplify it to any sort of decent listening level.

Cool. Thanks for that feedback. Its looking more and more like my wants aren't going to match reality unless I make changes, as I suspect the problem you note applies to the Audio Technicas, too.

Cheers

ive got the senheiser HD212 pros and i love them. I got them off ebay for about $80 delivered (and they came with a nice digital watch worth about $50, a real one mind you not some crappy useless ebay thing).
They sound fantastic for their size, they are very comfortable, the cable is a perfect length for sitting at the PC, and you can easily swap the cable over if it gets damaged (or you want a longer/shorter one when you swap between PC and ipod) because it plugs into the actual headphones with a couple of 1.5mm jacks. This is the main reason i bought them, so i dont have to buy whole new headphones if the cable gets screwed. Anyhoo thats just what i liked about them.
