Good work Creative. Delete all the "negative PR".

Cunts.

Um, yay?

I'm still not buying creative again. But tell me, atomica, what other cards out there support EAX? (And hopefully MacOS?)

Wow...thats a bit of a turnaround. It seems as though they are bowing to public pressure.

That first post by Dale_CL has be completely changed from the original that sparked the whole thread.

Seems like better news, anyway.

Ha!
Nice going Creative, I guess they must look up to MS for their monopolistic practices.

The problem with moving to Auzentech is that they still are Creative based cards and require some driver components (or did by my last research).
So you are kinda screwed if you want a decent mid-range consumer card.

Yeah, I'm still not buying creative again [not that I would have, I still maintain their a chumps brand (except for EAX because that's the standard for gaming, but that doesn't mean the sound quality is good >_<)] mainly because that this turnaround was only in the face of people boycotting their product.

They should have had proper driver support from the start.

AFAIK Auzentech have licensed the ability to do EAX basically. But I'm pretty sure they develop their own drivers, which is why the prelude works so much better then any x-fi series on Vista.

Well, Creative do have a very good point. However, if they're deliberately crippling cards and their functionality to sell more of a new card then I do believe someone needs to step in.

I haven't bought a Creative card in many years, because they're quite simply substandard junk. Even their "pro" cards are lame at best. I wonder if they cripple those with bad drivers too?

I remember my brother bought a XI-FI and was incredibly happy. He was finally going to be able to record his own DJ sets and just outlayed a bit of cash for it. "Vista ready!" on the box and everything... They hadn't even released Vista drivers at this point. My bro bought a copy of Vista with it too, so you can imagine how upset he was, being on apprentice wages, getting home and finding out something he had high hopes for to lift his creativity had completely crippled his ability to do what he wanted.

I'll personally never buy Creative again, but I made up my mind way before this. Purely because, as I said, they're substandard junk. Then again so are most the other manufacturers. For gaming, sure it might be passable, but for anything else it's a joke.

In short, fuck you Creative. You've yet again fucked over your users and tried bringing down the person who was actually helping legitimate buyers get the product they'd paid for in good faith, to get a service you were supposed to provide.

No I think they use the drivers developed by creative. They may be just repackaged to look different.

anyone got linkage to these vista x-fi drivers? Or at least a filename of what I'm supposed to be looking for?

I believe.

Weird.

I've never heard anyone with a prelude complain, yet everyone complains about the X-Fi series.
Perhaps you're right though.

Squidy: "However, if they're deliberately crippling cards and their functionality to sell more of a new card then I do believe someone needs to step in."

That's just it. It's been shown that by simply toggling some flags in the driver files, you can enable these various features under Vista. The same applies to the ALchemy program. Turn off a flag or two in the binary files, and it will happily work on Audigy cards, where Creative insists it's an X-Fi only feature.

Daniel exposed this, Creative got embarrassed and went Scientology on his arse. At least Creative stuck to threats, and didn't go suing willy nilly.

Daniel K has summarised what has happened, and what he has done. Seems like he had only received $146 in donations, which was $100 short to even buy an X-Fi to work with. It also says that Creative are going to allow him to continue to mod previous cards, but not the X-fi series (apparently), and allow him to receive donations for his work.

Interesting read, but the whole thing still sucks arse.

Well. I've got an Auzen Prelude with X-Fi chipset, but that'll be my last association with Creative. That said, I've no plans to switch away from Auzentech soundcards as the company's attitude, product and driver updates are brilliant!!

As for their drivers, I believe Auzen do write their own (albeit likely from Creative source code). I say that, because when I enquired about Linux drivers for the Prelude, they gave a likely end of year release, noting they were at an early stage of development.

Reference the Prelude driver thread:

Nice to see Creative have backed down a fair bit on this.
All the deleted threads on their forums have been reinstated. Not much else of substance has been conceded yet that I have seen.

I think they have pulled a Sony on themselves here, and will likely lose more customers especially in markets such as Atomic type ones.

So X-fi cards still don't work properly on Vista?

Glad I swapped mine out for a Bluegears b-Enspirer.

My brother installed Vista 4 times this week. His XIFI keeps disabling itself or uninstalling itself despite everything else working fine. I'm going to have to track down this guy's drivers.
