AVG or Avast! ?

hey guys

i'm building a PC for a mate (who is notorious to getting viruses lol)... so i'm wondering what free AV program i should use

i need one that is non-resource hungry and scans everything he is doing in the background. I know that kind of cancels the first thing out but which of these does that best:

AVG ( http://free.grisoft.com/ww.download-avg-anti-virus-free-edition)

OR

Avast! ( http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html)

thanks

Daniel

p.s. is this true about the 60 day FREE trial...

Avast seems to do more scanning of minute things such as MSN messages. Also, the 60 day trial is correct. The key is free anyway.

Free registration and you can use it for a year. After a year you need to re-register, again free.
I find Avast seems to have slightly better detection than AVG and it updates more frequently, so Avast is my preferred free AV.

Avast is also fully functional in the free version, as where AVG has limitations, such as exception setting.

I like Avast! Had to use it for a while until i got my BitDefender problem soughted, and to be honest it made me feel silly paying for BitDefender when there is a great app like Avast available for nothing :(

I agree with the other disembodied voices here. I've used both Avast and AVG. My preference is for Avast; it's customisable, it's powerful but it's also easy to use and has a minimal footprint.

Yep - as aliali said, you just need to re-register when your year is up, but that is also a free process :-)

Why? It has no advantage over avira or avast, and is in fact more limited.

Is this just a case of people being more comfortable with what they are familiar with, and thus the illusion of security, or can someone argue a technical merit?

You might want to read that again.

When I occasionally boot into windows Avast paired with Comodo Firewall.

I usually use Linux so don't care there, I have a collection of virii that can't do anything on my desktop.

You could have just read it again; would have saved us both time and effort.

You replied to someone supporting Avast and you said it has no advantage over avira or avast.

I looked at what I wrote, I had not realized I quoted the wrong person.

Thanks, and fixed.

i find avast has alot of false positives

i would run AVG, with a link in the browser to trend micros online scan.

if he isn't running vista i also recommend Sygate Personal Firewall.

A false positive is preferable to a true negative.

Can you actually give some examples of Avast having false positives? It can be somewhat dependent on your configuration.

You can see AVG is not up to the task when you need to run a second scanner.
